Four weeks of Christmas market with the Palatinate Belznickel tradition at Schloßplatz
The "Belznickel" (also Pelznickel or Belznickl) is the local variant of Santa Claus in the Palatinate and neighboring Saarland. He originally appeared in rough furs, knocked on doors with a switch, and checked the children's behavior. The figure is closely associated with pre-Christmas customs and gives the Pirmasens Christmas market its name.
The central Schloßplatz with the Pirminius Church provides the ideal backdrop for the market. Decorated fir trees, fairy lights strung between buildings, and a large Christmas tree shape the scene. The wooden huts are arranged along the edges of the square, forming alleys through which visitors can stroll.
With a duration of around four weeks — from the end of November until just before Christmas — the Belznickelmarkt is one of the longest-running Advent markets in the region. On weekends, there are concerts, nativity plays, children's activities, and of course, visits from the Belznickel himself. Schools and clubs fill the stage calendar with performances, making the program colorful and diverse.
The stalls offer classic Christmas market specialties: mulled wine, eggnog, and hot drinks, bratwurst, tarte flambée, chestnuts, roasted almonds, and sweet temptations like fried dough pastries and gingerbread. In addition, local artisans present carved nativity figures, ceramics, jewelry, and woodwork — many of whom use the market as their most important sales opportunity of the year.
The market is organized by the Pirmasens City Marketing department. It is the largest Christmas market in the Westpfalz region and follows seamlessly after the Pirmasens November Market, which takes place a few weeks earlier.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
