Kolping Community in the Heart of Lünen

The Kolpingsfamilie Lünen-Horstmar/Niederaden belongs to the large Kolpingwerk Deutschland — one of the oldest Catholic social associations, founded in 1849 by the Rhenish priest Adolph Kolping. The Lünen family itself looks back on over 100 years of tradition and is deeply anchored in the St. Peter and Paul parish community of Horstmar.

What is a Kolping Summer Festival?

The annual Sommerfest is one of the most important meeting dates in the yearly calendar. It brings together members, families, friends, and neighbors — across generations and in an uncomplicated way. The focus: barbecuing, salads, cool drinks, joint singing, and a children's program. It's not a big event, but a club summer festival with character — and that's exactly what makes it appealing.

The 2026 Summer Festival is planned for Friday, July 10, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM at the Parish Hall of the Kolpingsfamilie Horstmar/Niederaden in Lünen-Horstmar. The date corresponds to the annual tradition of the event on the first or second Friday in July (previous event in 2025: July 4).

Program

• From 6:00 PM: Opening at the parish hall
• Barbecue evening with bratwurst, sausages, vegetarian alternatives
• Salad buffet — contributed by members
• Cool drinks (beer, wine, soft drinks)
• Children's program: games, crafts, fun activities
• Joint singing with members of the church choir
• Presentation of the half-year program — new events, excursions, meetings

Adolph Kolping and the Kolpingwerk

Adolph Kolping (1813–1865) was a Rhenish priest and social reformer who founded the movement of the Gesellenvereine (journeymen's associations) — associations for young traveling craftsmen. This evolved into today's Kolpingwerk: an international association with over 400,000 members in Germany and another 450,000 worldwide. The combination of faith, community, education, and social engagement continues to shape the work of individual Kolpingsfamilien today.

Horstmar and Niederaden — the Districts

Lünen is a district town in the Unna district in the eastern Ruhr area, with over 86,000 inhabitants. Horstmar is a northwestern district, and Niederaden borders it directly. Both districts have a village character — the Lippe river, fields, and forests shape the landscape. The St. Peter and Paul parish community of Horstmar (now part of the Lünen Pastoral Area) is the social and religious center.

Come Along

Those who don't know the Kolpingwerk are especially welcome at the summer festival. It's not an exclusive club, but consciously opens itself to the outside. Friends and neighbors are explicitly invited.
