Grand Campus Festival and Open Day of the University of Bremen
During OPEN CAMPUS, the University of Bremen's campus transforms into a large experience zone: faculties, institutes, and departments showcase their research and offerings. Lab tours, hands-on experiments, lectures, and guided tours to normally inaccessible areas make science tangible — all in an atmosphere that's more festival than lecture hall.
The first OPEN CAMPUS took place on June 21, 2013, under the motto 'Opening Worlds — Sharing Knowledge', which remains valid to this day. Despite initially rainy weather, it attracted around 12,000 visitors. Since then, the university has generally invited citizens from Bremen and the surrounding area every two years to experience research and teaching up close. What began as a modest festival has grown into a firm tradition: recent editions have seen around 20,000 guests on campus.
Alongside the scientific program, a large stage provides a festival atmosphere: open-air concerts featuring reggae, hip-hop, rap, and pop, a poetry slam, and DJ sets attract a young, diverse audience. This makes OPEN CAMPUS a meeting point for prospective students, current students, families, and curious guests from all over Bremen — education and entertainment go hand in hand.
The guiding principle perfectly captures the festival's ambition: the university sees itself as an open place that shares knowledge with the city community. Accessible paths, ramps, and mobile support teams ensure the festival is accessible to everyone. OPEN CAMPUS is thus one of the largest and most open science festivals in the Northwest — and a vibrant testament to the close connection between the university and the Hanseatic city in the state of Bremen.
