Bremen's second-largest festival — organized voluntarily from the student dormitories
Not many festivals are put on by an entire dormitory. The Sommerfest Vorstraße feat. Spittaler Straße is exactly that kind of festival: Once a year, the residents of the Vorstraße dormitory and Spittaler Straße transform their residential park at the Fleet into a small, fine open-air venue. In 2026, the 47th edition will take place on May 29th and 30th — voluntary, self-organized, and with free admission.
On two stages — one in the courtyard, one directly on the Fleet — primarily bands and artists from Bremen and the surrounding area perform. The spectrum ranges from rock, hip-hop, and techno to ska and singer-songwriter pop. Friday is dedicated entirely to music with several bands playing late into the evening. Saturday starts in the afternoon with a cultural program: poetry slam, children's program, and interactive activities, before the bands take over again in the evening. Young, up-and-coming regional acts are deliberately given a stage.
With around 6,000 visitors over two days, the Sommerfest ranks second among Bremen's largest festivals, after Breminale. Student-friendly prices, a family atmosphere, and the explicit aim of being a place of diversity, well-being, and acceptance with zero tolerance for violence and discrimination define its special character. The festival is firmly anchored in Bremen's summer calendar and is a must-attend event for many students in the city.
The venue is the residential park at the Fleet on Vorstraße in the Lehe district, near the University of Bremen. Its location by the water and amidst greenery gives the festival its relaxed, typically Hanseatic, and unpretentious character.
