One of Germany's largest open-air improvisation theatre festivals
For almost three decades, since 1997, Theatersport Freiburg has transformed the bandstand in Freiburg's Stadtgarten into an open-air stage for improvisation theatre every summer. The 2026 edition marks the 29th iteration of the festival, which has grown over the years to become one of Germany's largest open-air improvisation theatre festivals. Theatersport Freiburg itself is one of the most established improvisation theatre associations in Southern Germany and enjoys a high reputation in the national scene.
The venue is the bandstand in Freiburg's Stadtgarten — one of the most beautiful city gardens in Southern Germany. The open pavilion architecture provides a natural open-air stage, surrounded by the green city park in Freiburg's west. Spectators sit on specially erected stands or on the lawn — the atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than in indoor theatres. When the weather cooperates — and Freiburg's summer is often very pleasant, as Freiburg is known as Germany's sunniest city — a unique festival atmosphere is created.
The 2026 programme features twelve performances by ten improvisation groups over six days (July 12th to 17th, 2026). The skill level ranges from beginners to advanced players to professionals — a deliberate diversity that makes the festival a reflection of the entire improvisation scene. Each group brings its own format: long-form improvisation (a continuous story lasting 60–90 minutes), short-form (classic theatre sport with games and suggestions), musical improvisation, and theme-specific formats (crime, soap opera, fairy tale).
A special highlight in 2026: The long-standing improvisation group FREISTIL celebrates its 24th consecutive festival appearance — a remarkable anniversary that demonstrates the group's connection to the festival. FREISTIL is one of the best-known and longest-established improvisation theatre groups in the German-speaking world.
The festival concludes with the Champignon evening — a traditional highlight where 12 to 14 players from all participating groups take the stage together to improvise. This spontaneous mix of different playing styles and experience levels is the ultimate discipline: those who can maintain their improvisational reflexes here can improvise anywhere. The Champignon is consistently the festival's sold-out evening.
Freiburg im Breisgau, with around 235,000 inhabitants, is the fourth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and is considered Germany's sunniest city. Nestled between the Black Forest, Kaiserstuhl, and the Rhine plain, Freiburg attracts millions of visitors every year. The Open-Air Impro Festival fits into the rich summer cultural calendar, which ranges from the Freiburg Lake Festival to the Zelt-Musik-Festival and the Schlossbergfest. Those who come for the festival often settle into one of the cafés on Augustinerplatz or in Konviktstraße after the performance — Freiburg's student life shows its most beautiful side here.
The 29th edition of the Open-Air Impro Theatre Festival Freiburg runs from Sunday, July 12th to Friday, July 17th, 2026 — six days of improvisation theatre at the Stadtgarten bandstand.
The organiser, as since 1997, is Theatersport Freiburg. Twelve performances by ten improvisation groups from Germany and abroad make up the programme. The skill level ranges from beginners to advanced players to professionals. Tickets are available via theatersport-freiburg.de.
