Eight open-air days above the rooftops of Freiburg — three weekends, three stages, free entry at the Stadtgarten
The Schlossberg Festival Freiburg is one of Baden-Württemberg's most unusual open-air formats: eight festival days, spread over three weekends, right in the middle of the city — and yet high above it. The Schlossberg, that wooded hill between the old town and the Black Forest, serves as a natural grandstand. Three stages will be set up in the Stadtgarten area and along the ascents, with the audience spread out on the lawns, walls, and steps.
After a break in 2025, the festival returns in a new form in 2026: Fri, July 31 and Sat, August 1, Thu, August 6 to Sat, August 8, and Thu, August 13 to Sat, August 15, 2026. The organizers continue to focus on low-threshold entry (day tickets between 4 and 5 Euros) and a mixed program of rock, pop, indie, jazz, and acoustic sets. Bands from Freiburg and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald region are just as much on the schedule as acts from Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Switzerland.
Between concerts, the food truck mile invites you to linger: Black Forest snacks, vegan bowls, Alsatian Flammkuchen, ice cream from Freiburg manufacturers. Bars serve wine from Kaiserstuhl, Tannenzäpfle beer from Rothaus, and cocktails. The festival runs daily from 6 PM to 11 PM, with admission costing 4 to 5 Euros per day — a deliberately low price that keeps the festival accessible to students and families.
You can reach the Schlossberg from Freiburg main station in a 15-minute walk through the old town. The Schlossbergbahn (funicular railway) runs directly from Karlsplatz to the halfway point — convenient for families and those who want to skip the climb. Driving into the city center is difficult; use the Park-and-Ride facilities on the outskirts and the trams to the center.
The city of Freiburg im Breisgau, with around 235,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in southern Baden-Württemberg and is considered the capital of the Black Forest. A university city, solar city, wine city — and in summer, a festival city. The Schlossberg Festival complements the ZMF (Zelt-Musik-Festival) at the Mundenhof with an urban, affordable format directly at the foot of the Black Forest.
After a break in 2025, the Schlossberg Festival will launch in 2026 with a new concept. Instead of a single continuous weekend, the program will now be spread over three long weekends — more accessible for working people and families, while also being less of a burden on residents around the Stadtgarten.
Rock, pop, indie, folk, and jazz acts will alternate on the three stages. The focus will be on bands from Freiburg, the Markgräflerland, the Kaiserstuhl, and neighboring Alsace. The full lineup will be published on schlossbergfestivalfreiburg.de.
The detailed 2026 lineup (bands, set times, stage assignments) will be published in early July 2026 on the official website. Expect primarily acts from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald region, Karlsruhe-Stuttgart, and Alsace — rock, indie, folk, jazz, singer-songwriters.
Day tickets 4–5 Euros at the box office. Children under 12 sometimes free admission. Bar and food truck purchases separate.
