A Wine Festival in One of Germany's Most Beautiful Squares
The Freiburg Wine Festival on Münsterplatz is one of the most important wine festivals in Baden-Württemberg and a hallmark of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. Directly in front of the famous Freiburg Minster and the historic facade of the Historisches Kaufhaus, around 60 Baden wine-growing estates present their wines – over six days in July, right in the heart of Freiburg's old town.
Over 400 Wines from Baden
With over 400 different wines, the Freiburg Wine Festival is one of the largest stages for Baden wine. All important Baden growing regions are represented:
- Markgräflerland (Gutedel, Spätburgunder)
- Kaiserstuhl (Burgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder)
- Tuniberg (fresh white wines)
- Breisgau (Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder)
- Ortenau (Klingelberger/Riesling, Spätburgunder)
- Tauberfranken (sporadic)
The Festival Backdrop — Münsterplatz
Münsterplatz is one of the most beautiful squares in Southern Germany. Framed by the Gothic Minster to the south, the red-orange Historisches Kaufhaus to the south, and the colorful patrician houses to the west, it offers an incomparable backdrop. During the day, the Minster Market takes place here – from the late afternoon, the wine stands open, and the square transforms into an open-air wine bar.
Opening with Tradition
The festival opens on July 2, 2026, at 6 PM on the stage in front of the Historisches Kaufhaus – with speeches, music, and a traditional cutting ceremony. Afterwards, locals and visitors flock to the stands.
Atmosphere and Audience
The Freiburg Wine Festival has an urban profile: students from the University of Freiburg, professionals from the city center, guests from the Black Forest, Alsace, and Switzerland, as well as international tourists. The audience is mixed, the atmosphere relaxed – not a mass festival, no beer tent hustle, but an open standing wine festival under the Freiburg sky.
Enjoyment in the Old Town
If you get hungry, you'll find countless restaurants, cafés, and snack bars with Baden cuisine around Münsterplatz and in the alleys of the old town. On the festival grounds themselves, stands offer Flammkuchen, pretzels, cheese, cold cuts, and small tapas plates to go with the wine.
