Over 400 Baden wines on Münsterplatz in front of the Historic Kaufhaus
The Freiburg Wine Festival on Münsterplatz is one of the most important wine festivals in Baden-Württemberg and a hallmark of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. Directly in front of the famous Freiburg Minster and the historic facade of the Historisches Kaufhaus, around 60 Baden wine-growing estates present their wines – over six days in July, right in the heart of Freiburg's old town.
With over 400 different wines, the Freiburg Wine Festival is one of the largest stages for Baden wine. All important Baden growing regions are represented:
Münsterplatz is one of the most beautiful squares in Southern Germany. Framed by the Gothic Minster to the south, the red-orange Historisches Kaufhaus to the south, and the colorful patrician houses to the west, it offers an incomparable backdrop. During the day, the Minster Market takes place here – from the late afternoon, the wine stands open, and the square transforms into an open-air wine bar.
The festival opens on July 2, 2026, at 6 PM on the stage in front of the Historisches Kaufhaus – with speeches, music, and a traditional cutting ceremony. Afterwards, locals and visitors flock to the stands.
The Freiburg Wine Festival has an urban profile: students from the University of Freiburg, professionals from the city center, guests from the Black Forest, Alsace, and Switzerland, as well as international tourists. The audience is mixed, the atmosphere relaxed – not a mass festival, no beer tent hustle, but an open standing wine festival under the Freiburg sky.
If you get hungry, you'll find countless restaurants, cafés, and snack bars with Baden cuisine around Münsterplatz and in the alleys of the old town. On the festival grounds themselves, stands offer Flammkuchen, pretzels, cheese, cold cuts, and small tapas plates to go with the wine.
The Freiburg Wine Festival 2026 takes place from Thursday, July 2nd, to Tuesday, July 7th, 2026, on Münsterplatz – the 53rd edition. Around 60 Baden vintners and cooperatives offer over 400 wines, plus Sekt and Crémant from Baden.
Opening on July 2nd at 6 PM on the stage in front of the Historisches Kaufhaus. Opening hours daily from 5 PM; Thursday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday until 12 AM; Friday and Saturday until 1 AM (serving until 12:30 AM). Free admission, consumption on site.
Around 60 Baden establishments; over 400 wines from the growing regions Markgräflerland, Kaiserstuhl, Tuniberg, Breisgau, Ortenau, Tauberfranken.
Freiburg is located on the Rhine in southwestern Baden-Württemberg. Freiburg main station is a hub for ICE, regional, and S-Bahn trains. From the main station to Münsterplatz, it's about a 10-minute walk or 2 stops by tram.
Free admission. Wine and food are consumed on site.
Come on a Sunday or Tuesday if you want to enjoy Münsterplatz in a relaxed atmosphere. It gets significantly busier on weekends.
