The Vegesacker Markt is among Bremen's most traditional Volksfeste, boasting a history spanning over two centuries. Between Sedanplatz and Aumunder Markt, Bremen's North transforms for several days into a vibrant fairground mile with amusement rides, stalls, culinary stands, and games. The historic port town of Vegesack, with its maritime flair, provides a unique backdrop for the festivities.
Parade and Gesche Burial
The market traditionally opens with a grand parade that enlivens Vegesack's streets. A unique custom marks the atmospheric conclusion: the burial of 'Gesche' on the fairground. This tradition is an integral part of the Vegesacker Markt and distinctively signals the end of the Volksfest – a piece of living Hanseatic festival culture.

Vegesacker Markt — edition 2026
From September 4th to 9th, 2026, the 218th Vegesacker Markt will once again transform Bremen's North into a fairground mile. Between Sedanplatz and Aumunder Markt, amusement rides, stalls, and culinary stands will beckon, along with the traditional market parade. It's open daily from 2 PM to 11 PM, until 9 PM on the final day. The detailed program will be announced by the organizer later.
Programme Vegesacker Markt 2026
September 4th to 9th, 2026 – Fairground between Sedanplatz and Aumunder Markt
The 218th Vegesacker Markt is open daily from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM, until 9:00 PM on the last day (Wednesday). Over 100 showmen and women will set up amusement rides, games of chance, shooting galleries, and food stalls.
Friday, September 4th, 2026 – Opening with Market Parade
- Approx. 5:00 PM — Start of the traditional market parade at Kulturbahnhof Vegesack
- Parade through Vegesack's city center to the Bürgerhaus
- Approx. 6:00 PM — At the Bürgerhaus: Opening speeches, candy rain, cannon shot, and awards for the most beautiful parade groups with prize money
- Official opening of the market operations afterwards
Weekend & Weekdays
- Over 100 amusement rides, shooting galleries, games of chance, and gastronomic stalls
- Food stalls with classic Volksfest cuisine
Monday, September 7th, 2026 – Family Day
Reduced prices on all attractions and rides – ideal for families.
Wednesday, September 9th, 2026 – Closing Day with Market Burial
Open until 9:00 PM; traditionally, the symbolic market burial takes place at the end – a humorous ritual to bid farewell to the Vegesacker Markt.
