Historic Racing Cars, Soapbox Derby and Brandenburg Motorsport Heritage
The Industrial Museum Brandenburg an der Havel is housed in the only surviving Siemens-Martin steel hall from the GDR era—an industrial architectural monument that brings the history of steel production in the Havel city to life. In GDR times, Brandenburg an der Havel was one of the country's most important steel locations alongside Eisenhüttenstadt, and the museum documents the city's industrial identity with original machinery, eyewitness accounts, and special exhibitions. This atmosphere—steel, concrete, machine culture—gives the Oldtimer Meeting its unmistakable character.
Brandenburg an der Havel has its own motorsport tradition: races on the city circuit, grandstand races in the 1950s, and later rally and crosskart sports. The meeting curates this heritage in an exhibition featuring original vehicles, historical race programs, and memories from Brandenburg motorsport athletes. In addition, there are demonstration drives: motorcycles and automobiles from the 1920s to the 1980s are presented and driven by their owners.
The absolute family highlight is the traditional soapbox derby on Sunday. In the holiday week before the meeting, the Industrial Museum organizes a building workshop for children aged 10 to 15, where they construct their own soapbox cars. In the race, the self-built vehicles compete against each other—an educational and playful connection of technology transfer and motorsport enthusiasm that few other museums in Brandenburg implement.
The meeting is free of charge. The Industrial Museum sees itself as a low-threshold educational site that makes Brandenburg's industrial and motorsport culture accessible to a broad public. Brandenburg an der Havel, as an independent city in the state of Brandenburg, thus positions itself as a place of living technological history—not in museum hall stillness, but in moving, roaring action.
The annual Oldtimer and Motorsport Meeting will traditionally take place in 2026 on the last weekend of July — likely on July 25 and 26. The organizer is the Industrial Museum Brandenburg an der Havel at August-Sonntag-Straße 5 (14770 Brandenburg an der Havel).
The program includes the presentation of historic racing motorcycles and automobiles, demonstration drives, a special exhibition on Brandenburg's motorsport heritage, and the traditional soapbox derby, whose vehicles are built by children in the building workshop of the preceding week.
Specific times and program details will be published by mid-July 2026 on the Industrial Museum's website. Proven schedule from previous years:
