Traditional St. Nicholas Market at St. Johanniskirche church square — for over 30 years, with a 3-meter high gingerbread witch house
From November 27th to 29th, 2026, the 1st Advent weekend, the traditional Nikolausmarkt Halle (Westf.) opens its doors at the church square of the venerable St. Johanniskirche. For over 30 years, the market has been a firm fixture in Halle's Advent calendar — lovingly maintained by the Haller Interessen- und Werbegemeinschaft (HIW), the association of Halle's shops and businesses.
What sets the Haller St. Nicholas Market apart from other Advent markets is its architecture: The stalls are designed in the half-timbered style — a deliberate nod to the historical architecture of the Ostwestfalen region. The blend of the medieval church square, half-timbered stalls, and Advent lighting creates an atmosphere that is both cozy and familial — not a "large" market with crowds, but a manageable, charming Advent experience.
A highlight is the approximately 3-meter-high gingerbread witch house — a walk-in gingerbread house installation that is rebuilt each year. Children's eyes widen when they stand before it. Inside, they can look around, admire the "gingerbread details," and perhaps even take a small gingerbread cookie with them at the end. A creative idea that makes the Haller market unique.
St. Nicholas visits the market — usually on Saturday — with gifts for children. A special initiative: Halle's businesses fulfill 24 children's wishes from less privileged families each year — a social project that connects the Advent market with concrete social engagement.
On the small stage at the church square, the music program features brass choirs, school wind ensembles, choirs, and local musicians. The organizers focus on regional performers rather than national stars — making the market a community affair for the town.
On Sunday, the 1st of Advent, there is Sunday shopping — from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Halle's shops open their doors. A great opportunity for a stroll between the Advent market and the retail stores, for gift shopping, and for experiencing the Haller Advent weekend with all your senses.
Halle (Westf.) is a district town in the Gütersloh district with around 21,000 inhabitants. The town is located on the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest, in southern Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Its location between Bielefeld, Gütersloh, and Osnabrück makes it a small but vibrant center. Halle is famous for the Gerry Weber Open (now Terra Wortmann Open) — the grass tennis tournament held just before Wimbledon. But in Advent, the focus is on the St. Nicholas Market at the church square.
Three days of cozy Advent market at the church square in the heart of Halle. Half-timbered stalls, gingerbread witch house, music program, St. Nicholas, and social initiatives characterize the weekend.
