28th Edition — Over 30 Beer Specialties on Venghauss-Platz
The town of Werther (Westphalia), with around 11,000 inhabitants in the Gütersloh district of North Rhine-Westphalia, is located in the southern Teutoburg Forest between Bielefeld and Halle (Westphalia). It is a small town with a vibrant city centre, an active business association, and a solid event calendar — from the horse market and town festival to the Bierfest in midsummer. The C.-F.-Venghauss-Platz in the city centre is the main event area.
In 2026, the Bierfest Werther will be hosted for the 28th time by the Werbegemeinschaft Werther e.V. For three days, the square in the city centre transforms into an open-air beer garden with over 30 different beer specialties — from top-fermented Pilsner and Hefeweizen to IPAs and craft beers, as well as Bockbier and non-alcoholic beer mixes. Wines and soft drinks are also served. The festival embodies the classic Werther summer: people meet, stand together at high tables, and know their neighbours — the business association puts it as "you almost always meet one or two friends or acquaintances from the neighbourhood".
The kickoff is on Friday, August 7, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM, with the keg tapping by the mayor at 7:00 PM. Saturday, August 8, starting at 4:00 PM: Continuation of the Bierfest program, many regulars meet, live music in the city centre. Sunday, August 9, starting at 11:00 AM: Frühschoppen atmosphere, with a flea market in the adjacent city centre running concurrently. Sundays tend to be more family-oriented, with a calmer atmosphere and coffee and cake offerings.
Classics remain grilled sausages, steaks, fries, and potato pancakes. New for 2026 are burgers and crêpes, with which the business association responds to changing tastes. Various stalls offer snacks and main courses alongside beer service. However, the focus remains clear: the beer — Pilsner, Hefeweizen, regional specialties, and craft beer tasting sets are at the centre.
The Bierfest is part of the town's summer season, which traditionally also includes Werther leuchtet (Werther Lights Up), the town festival, and the Werther Horse Market. With its location in the Werretal, its proximity to Bielefeld, and its manageable city centre size, the festival develops its own intimate urban feel — not a mass event, but locally anchored, grown beer culture in the heart of the Gütersloh district.
