Cross-border market in the Lamer Winkel
Lam's market square, idyllically situated in the Bavarian Forest Nature Park near the Czech border, transforms into a colorful and characterful market mile during the autumn edition of So a Kirta. Around 40 exhibitors from Germany and the Czech Republic set up their stalls, offering a range of products rarely found in regular retail: handmade leather goods, warm wool products for the approaching winter, children's fashion, wood crafts, and numerous new discoveries from artisans and manufacturers.
So a Kirta is more than just a market: the event is part of the cross-border Euregio cooperation and serves as a cultural bridge between the Upper Palatinate-Bavarian region and the Bohemian Šumava area. It highlights the historically grown economic, social, and cultural connections on both sides of the border, making them directly tangible for visitors.
Restaurateurs from Lam and the Lamer Winkel cater to your culinary desires with hearty delicacies and sweet specialties. Traditional Bavarian and Bohemian music fills the market square — folk music groups like the Enzian Duo or Taky Taky typically accompany the festivities from 9 AM to 3 PM. For the younger guests, there's face painting, flower arranging, beeswax wrap crafting, card making, performances by magician Waltini, a bouncy castle, and a classic children's carousel.
Lam, located in the Cham district of the Bavarian Forest, is the main town of the so-called Lamer Winkel, a valley basin surrounded by high mountains. The market community, with its characteristic market square lined with historic inns, is a popular excursion destination and a starting point for hikes around the Großer Osser and Hoher Bogen. So a Kirta takes place twice a year: once in summer and once in autumn — the autumn edition is considered particularly atmospheric as it heralds the pre-Christmas season.
The 2026 autumn market will once again bring numerous exhibitors from the German-Czech border region to Lam's market square on October 4th. The organizers are relying on the proven concept: artisanal quality, Bavarian-Bohemian diversity, and a family-friendly supporting program.
Those who missed the summer edition in July will find October an ideal opportunity to discover early gifts for the approaching pre-Christmas season. The cooler temperatures do not detract from the atmosphere — on the contrary: the scent of mulled wine and stall lighting lend the market an autumnal charm that the summer edition cannot offer.
Exact stall times and program details will be updated on soakirta.de.
Free admission. Payment at the stalls and with the restaurateurs in cash or sometimes by EC card. Recommendation: bring sufficient cash.
By car via the B85 or B22, parking available on the outskirts of town. By train to Cham or Kötzting, then continue by bus to Lam.
Entry to the market is free. Food and purchases are made directly at the stalls.
If you have time, combine the market day with a hike up the Großer Arber or a visit to the Glasstraße (Glass Road) — the Lamer Winkel is a worthwhile destination all year round.
