Grand Cabbage Festival around Krauthof Reuter in the Franconian Lake District
The Heglauer Krautfest takes place in the Heglau district of the town of Merkendorf in the Ansbach district. Merkendorf bears the nickname "Historic Cabbage Town" β cabbage cultivation has shaped the region for centuries. Since 2001, the Cabbage Festival has been celebrated annually on the third Sunday in September, attracting up to 10,000 visitors from near and far to the small village of Heglau.
The centerpiece is Krauthof Reuter, which opens its doors for one day, offering a look behind the scenes of sauerkraut production. Visitors can experience cabbage shredding demonstrations, free sauerkraut tastings, and a cabbage head guessing game. The culinary offerings range from cabbage rolls, cabbage soup, and cabbage ice cream to cabbage cheese, cabbage pralines, and cabbage cake.
In addition to cabbage, the festival features a farmers' market with regional producers, arts and crafts, and a special children's program with soap bubbles, face painting, and a trampoline. The festival runs as a day event from approximately 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
