The Frohnauer Hammer — Technical Monument and World Heritage Site

The Frohnauer Hammer is one of Saxony's most impressive technical monuments. Originally built as a grain mill in the 16th century, operated as an oil mill from 1611, it was converted into an iron hammer mill in 1657 — and has operated on the same principle ever since: a water-powered wheel drives heavy hammers that shape glowing iron into tools and sheets. The site has been a technical museum since 1907 and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Ore Mountain/Krušnohoří Mining Region since 2019. The special feature: the hammers and the entire drive system still function today — demonstrations show the facility in action, not just as a static exhibit.

German Mill Day — Whit Monday, May 25, 2026

German Mill Day, held annually on Whit Monday, is a nationwide event — over 1,000 mills, technical water and wind power plants across Germany open their doors and showcase historical craft and machine techniques. The Frohnauer Hammer has participated for years: On May 25, 2026, the hammers will run at full water power, the bellows will pump air into the forge fire, blacksmiths will demonstrate their work on glowing iron, and guided tours will explain the history and technology of the hammer mill. The date (Whit Monday) varies annually — in 2026, it falls on May 25.

UNESCO World Heritage Day — Sunday, June 7, 2026

UNESCO World Heritage Day, held on the first Sunday of June each year, is a nationwide event where all German UNESCO World Heritage sites offer special programs. For the Ore Mountain/Krušnohoří Mining Region — a transnational mining region inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2019 — the Frohnauer Hammer is one of the most accessible hotspots: On June 7, 2026, there will be special guided tours explaining the World Heritage status, lectures on the transnational cooperation between Saxon and Czech World Heritage components, and demonstrations of historical craft techniques at the water-powered hammer.

Frohnau and the Erzgebirgskreis District

Frohnau has been a district of Annaberg-Buchholz, the largest town in the Erzgebirgskreis district, since 1945. The region between Annaberg, Marienberg, and Schwarzenberg is the birthplace of the Ore Mountains as a mining region — silver mining began here in the 12th and 13th centuries, shaping Saxony economically and culturally for centuries. Those visiting the Frohnauer Hammer on an event day should extend their visit and also see the Annaberg Schaufensterstollen mine or the Marienberg Mining Museum.

Two Event Days at the Water-Powered Hammer Mill

In May and June 2026, the Frohnauer Hammer opens for two special days with an expanded program — both days offer a rare opportunity to see the hammer mill in operation and to learn more about the site's World Heritage significance.

On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, the Frohnauer Hammer participates in German Mill Day — a nationwide event where historical mills, hammer mills, and water-powered facilities open their doors. On Sunday, June 7, 2026, follows UNESCO World Heritage Day with a special program focusing on the World Heritage status of the Ore Mountain/Krušnohoří Mining Region, granted in 2019.
