Historic well-cleaning festival since the 15th century
The Bornquas (from «Born» — well and «Quas» — communal cleaning) originated in the 15th century as a practical act: once a year, the citizens of Neustadt jointly cleaned the town wells, which was traditionally associated with a festival. For centuries, well cleaning was part of the urban identity — until central water supply made the original function obsolete in the 20th century.
Since 1988, the Bornquas has been regularly revived by the association for the promotion of Neustadt customs e.V. («Brunnenverein») and has been celebrated on the 3rd weekend in June ever since. The well festival has become a city festival that references its historical roots while showcasing the cultural diversity of the town in the Saale-Orla-Kreis.
The 2026 edition has a special feature: after two years of construction, the well festival is returning to the newly renovated market square. The Bornquas thus marks a festive re-entry into the heart of the city center. The festival grounds include the new market square, the historic butcher's stalls (Fleischbänke), and the route along Ernst-Thälmann-Straße and Rodaer Straße.
The musical highlight of 2026 is the performance by Boerney & die Tri Tops on Saturday evening. For a quarter of a century, these Hamburg party rockers have brought Reeperbahn flair to every festival stage. In addition, regional associations, showmen, and traders shape the program with activities, music, and specialties.
The Bornquas is generally freely accessible — with the exception of the Saturday evening event with Boerney & die Tri Tops, which requires a separate ticket. This keeps the well festival a community-oriented, collectively supported city festival that combines historical tradition with contemporary festival culture.
