About the Tours
The "Heilige Hallen" (Holy Halls) are a roughly 25-hectare primeval forest reserve near Lüttenhagen in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft Nature Park. The red beech stand dates back up to 350 years and is considered Germany's oldest naturally regenerating beech forest. The name "Heilige Hallen" derives from the cathedral-like impression created by the tall, freestanding beech trunks.
Tour Details
A tour lasts three to four hours over approximately six kilometers. Forestry staff and nature park rangers explain:
- History of the Lüttenhagen forestry office and the special management of the Heilige Hallen
- Ecology of old beech forests, deadwood, fungi, insects, birds
- Significance of the stand for research and the climate debate
- Connection to the UNESCO World Heritage site "Ancient Beech Forests of Germany"
Significance
Old beech forests have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list "Ancient Beech Forests of Germany" since 2011; the Heilige Hallen are among the most prominent examples of their kind. This makes the tours some of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's few events with a direct World Heritage connection.
