Schützenfest of the St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Buchholz in the Westerwald on the first weekend of July
The St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Buchholz is the local marksmen's fraternity of the Westerwald community of Buchholz. Like many Rhenish marksmen's clubs, it is dedicated to Saint Hubertus of Liège, the patron saint of hunters and marksmen. The fraternity preserves the traditional marksman customs with shooting exercises, competitions, and the annual Schützenfest.
Buchholz (Westerwald) is a small community in the south of the Altenkirchen district, in the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld administrative district. Despite its size, the community has an active club structure in which the Schützenbruderschaft plays an important role. The Schützenfest is one of the social highlights of the village year.
In 2026, the Schützenfest will take place on Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th – on the first weekend of July. This date follows the traditional summer Schützenfest season in the Rhineland.
The Schützenhaus Buchholz is the fraternity's club house and festival venue. With a shooting range, meeting room, and outdoor area, it offers all the prerequisites for holding the festival – from competitions and catering to the marquee atmosphere.
Saturday's opening features the festival opening with bird shooting to determine the new Schützenkönig (marksman king). Whoever shoots down the last piece of the wooden bird becomes Schützenkönig and represents the fraternity for the following club year. The subsequent crowning of the king is a festive highlight. In the evening, the marquee evening with live music or DJ set, catering, and dancing follows. Sunday includes the festival service, possibly a small parade, a morning pint (Frühschoppen), and a communal lunch.
The Schützenfest Buchholz is an expression of a lively village community that cherishes its traditions. The fraternity members appear in full uniform with sashes and club badges. The close connection between the club and the local community shapes the familiar character of the festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Morning: Festival opening at the Schützenhaus by the fraternity's board. Arrival of the marksmen in full uniform, welcome of the festival guests. Afternoon: Bird shooting at the shooting range – the exciting determination of the new Schützenkönig through the traditional shooting at the wooden bird.
Afternoon: Festive crowning of the new Schützenkönig and his Queen with the handover of the king's chain. Honors for the previous royal couples, welcome of the new dignitaries.
Marquee evening at the Schützenhaus with live music or DJ set, catering with beer, bratwurst, and festival food, lively dancing, and social gatherings until late at night.
Morning: Festival service in the Catholic parish church with liturgical accompaniment by the fraternity. Possibly a small parade through the town. Afterwards, a morning pint (Frühschoppen) at the Schützenhaus with beer service and bratwurst. Lunch: communal meal.
Afternoon program with coffee and cake, possibly a concert or a small family program. Gradual winding down in the late afternoon, farewell to the festival guests.
