Since the 1970s, the Open-Air Museum for Folklore Schwerin-Mueß has showcased historic farm complexes from all over Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on a spacious site on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin — farmhouses, barns, workshops, and mills. The Frühjahrserwachen traditionally marks the start of the season and is one of the most popular family festivals in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Programme

The day begins with a spring market where regional producers offer seeds, plants, honey, cheese, and crafts. For families, there is puppet theatre (performances at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM), children's carousels, hands-on activities, craft workshops, and live feeding demonstrations. Craft demonstrations — blacksmithing, butter churning, thatched roof repairs — bring the history of Mecklenburg folklore to life. A guided wild herb walk in the afternoon and an Irish music concert in the late afternoon round off the programme.

Local Context

The Frühjahrserwachen follows a North German tradition: as soon as winter is over, the open-air museums open their season with a spring festival. The Mueß format cleverly combines this with family activities, a market, and cultural offerings — and has been a reliable must-attend event in Schwerin's calendar of events for years.
