Ganter Oktoberfest — the Freiburg Wiesn on the brewery grounds

The Ganter Oktoberfest is Freiburg's answer to the Munich Oktoberfest — smaller, cozier, but with the unmistakable character of a real brewery: It takes place on the grounds of the traditional Ganter Brewery in Freiburg-Herdern. The 12th edition runs in 2026 from September 24 to October 3, 2026, daily from 5 PM to 11 PM. The official main date, which also appears in many calendars as 'the' Ganter Oktoberfest, is Friday, October 3, 2026 — a public holiday, German Unity Day, and the grand finale of the Wiesn.

The Setting — Festival Tent, Beer Garden, Wine Bar

The festival grounds are divided into three areas:

• The Festival Tent in the brewery courtyard — the main stage with live music, long beer benches, Maß mugs, and a swaying floor
• The Beer Garden in the outdoor area — quieter, with shade, good for families and relaxed hours
• The Wine Bar — the Baden answer to the Bavarian Purity Law: Baden wines from Kaiserstuhl and Markgräflerland, table and house wines

The Ganter Festbier

Ganter Brewery specially brews a Ganter Festbier for the festival — fuller-bodied than the regular Pils, but not as sweet as the Munich Wiesn beers. The style is based on a classic Festbier, brewed according to Baden-South German tradition. It is served in a Maß (1 liter), half-liter, or smaller glass, depending on the stand.

Live Music 2026

The 2026 music program has been partially announced:

• Professor Alban & die Heimleuchter — the Swedish Eurodance star plus cover band, often the highlight of the Wiesn
• Schwarzwald Quintett — folk music from the Black Forest with a great atmosphere
• Funrise — cover and party band
• Further acts will be announced by September

Traditional Attire Welcome — Lederhosen and Dirndl

Unlike the Munich Oktoberfest, where traditional attire is now often mandatory, in Freiburg it is expressly welcome, but not compulsory. Those who come in a suit or normal city clothes will not stand out. However, those who unpack their Lederhosen or Dirndl — perhaps with a nod to the Baden Bollenhut — will get the full Wiesn feeling.

Herdern — the Traditional Brewery Location

Freiburg-Herdern is a predominantly middle-class, green district in the north of Freiburg. Ganter Brewery has been located on Schwarzwaldstraße for over a century; the brewery courtyard has been used for cultural events for decades. You can reach the 'Brauerei Ganter' stop directly with tram line 1 of the Freiburg public transport — it couldn't be more convenient.
