Six open-air concert evenings directly in front of Freiburg Minster
When summer arrives, Münsterplatz in the heart of Freiburg transforms into an open-air stage unparalleled in Germany. Directly in front of the late Romanesque west facade of Freiburg Minster, framed by the Historisches Kaufhaus (Historic Merchants' Hall) and the patrician houses of the old town, you will experience six concert evenings spanning the musical worlds from June 9 to 14, 2026. The organizer is Vaddi Concerts in cooperation with Albert Konzerte and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
The 2026 program showcases what makes this concert series so special: it embraces everything. The "Spanish Night of Albert Konzerte" with Bolero and Carmen opens the week classically and colorfully on June 9. On June 10, the Swedish power metal band Sabaton takes over the square, transforming the cobblestones in front of the Minster into a stadium. The following day features Clueso, one of Germany's most sought-after songwriters. SDP, the pop-hip-hop duo from Berlin, will have the crowds singing along on June 12. June 13 is reserved for an Electronic Music Night, and to conclude on June 14, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra will perform the "Italian Night" — Baroque music in a Baroque city setting.
Behind the festival is Vaddi Concerts, one of the traditional concert organizers in southwestern Germany. Albert Konzerte, one of Southern Germany's most renowned classical series, curates the classical evenings. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, one of the world's most sought-after ensembles for historically informed performance, will perform on the closing night. This curatorial constellation explains why the Münsterplatz Konzerte are both a Volksfest (popular festival) and a festival of the highest quality.
The acoustics of Münsterplatz are legendary: the high sandstone facades of the Minster reflect the sound, and the enclosed form of the square sustains the atmosphere. Those in the front standing areas get a view of the intricate Gothic spires during the concert — a backdrop that no concert hall can replicate. During the day, the Münsterplatz market continues, and in the evenings, the festival production takes over.
Freiburg, with around 230,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the Freiburg district, located on the western edge of the Black Forest and known as Germany's sunniest major city. The Albert Ludwig University, the Bächle (small water channels) in the old town alleys, the nearby Kaiserstuhl wine-growing region, and its proximity to France and Switzerland make the city one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in the southwest. The Münsterplatz Konzerte are the musical highlight of Freiburg's June, closely followed by the Zeltmusikfestival ZMF in July.
From Tuesday, June 9, to Sunday, June 14, 2026, the concert series takes place on Münsterplatz. Each evening is dedicated to a different artist or genre — making the series attractive to a broad audience, from classical fans to metalheads.
The evenings with Sabaton, Clueso, and SDP are classic open-air events with large audiences. The classical evenings (Spanish and Italian Night) and the Electronic Night attract their specific audiences to the square, depending on the genre. Performance times vary slightly — you can find the exact start times in the program on the festival website.
Tickets via Eventim and the festival website. Prices vary greatly by artist and category. Standing room and seated categories available. Combo tickets for multiple evenings may be possible. Early bird rates are recommended — top acts (Sabaton, Clueso, SDP) tend to sell out quickly.
Travel by train is recommended: Freiburg Main Station, then a 10-minute walk or take tram lines 1, 3, 4, 5 (stop Bertoldsbrunnen) to Münsterplatz. By car: A 5 exit Freiburg-Mitte, then use city center parking garages (Schlossberg, Rotteckring). Large-scale road closures within the city center are in effect on concert evenings.
June 9–14, 2026, one concert per evening. Admission usually starts at 6:30 PM, concerts begin at 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM. Details and exact start times per concert are available on muensterplatzkonzerte-freiburg.de.
Tickets are available via Eventim and the festival website. For the classical evenings (Spanish and Italian Night), also through Albert Konzerte. Prices vary depending on the artist and category. Standing room and seated categories are available.
