Whit Monday at the Walzmühle Casekow — Brandenburg's contribution to German Mill Day
German Mill Day — every year on Whit Monday — is one of Germany's oldest open-door events. Historic wind, water, and roller mills across the country open their doors, showcase their technology, and celebrate a craft that once shaped every village. Casekow in the west of the Uckermark is one of the most loyal participants in this event: Since 1994, the Dorfverein Casekow e.V. has been inviting visitors to the historic Walzmühle for Mill Day.
The Walzmühle Casekow is an industrial monument from the 19th century. Unlike the wind-powered post mills or Dutch-style windmills, which are now mostly preserved as attractions, the roller mill worked with a series of roller mills that ground the grain between them — a technology that replaced traditional millstones in the 19th century and ushered in the industrialization of flour production. The mill in Casekow has been preserved and is maintained by the village association as a historical testament to this transitional period.
The village association opens the mill doors all Whit Monday. The roller mills are set in motion several times a day — a demonstration where you can directly experience the noise and complexity of historic machinery. In addition, there are hands-on activities for children (baking bread, grinding flour with a hand stone mill, small miller workshops) and for adults (tours of the technical rooms, lectures on mill history). Regional dishes such as fresh bread with quark, cake, coffee, and beer are offered by the village association.
The Dorfverein Casekow e.V. has been organizing Mill Day voluntarily and with remarkable consistency since 1994. What began in 1994 as a small club event with a few dedicated citizens has now become a fixed date in the Uckermark's event calendar. The association uses the proceeds for the maintenance of the mill and for further village activities — a successful example of how civic engagement keeps a small industrial monument alive for decades.
Casekow, with a good 1,500 inhabitants, is a small municipality in the Gartz (Oder) district in the west of the Uckermark, located about 10 km west of the Polish border. The landscape is characterized by small lakes, forests, and rolling hills. Visitors to Mill Day can combine the day with a bike tour along the Oder or explore the nearby Stettiner Haff. Arrival by car via the A 11 is uncomplicated; by train, Casekow station is recommended, followed by a short walk.
On May 25, 2026, the historic Walzmühle Casekow will once again open its doors for German Mill Day. For six hours, visitors can experience the 19th-century technology firsthand — the roller mills run several times a day under expert guidance.
The organizer is the Dorfverein Casekow e.V., which has been organizing the festival since 1994 — with great volunteer effort and attention to detail.
