Advent in front of the Classicist Town Hall
The Güstrow Christmas Market, officially »Advent am Markt«, is one of the best-known Christmas markets in southern Mecklenburg. The venue is the town's market square, the Barlachstadt, with its classicist town hall facade, surrounded by narrow old town alleys, the late Gothic cathedral, and St. Mary's Parish Church. The historic setting makes the market one of the most beautiful in all of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
What Makes the Market Special
- Stalls with regional products from Mecklenburg: honey, jam, smoked fish, arts and crafts
- Mulled wine, bratwurst, and Mecklenburg Advent specialties
- Stage program with performances by Güstrow schoolchildren, choirs, and regional artists
- Warming bonfire in the center of the market
- Family-friendly atmosphere, short distances, manageable size
Tradition and Community
The Güstrow Christmas Market consciously positions itself as a regional market: local clubs, schools, and traders shape the image more than supra-regional showmen. This distinctly Mecklenburg character distinguishes it from the larger markets in Rostock or Schwerin and makes it a favorite destination for families seeking a quiet, traditional Advent.
An Excursion to the Barlach Town
The market visit can be ideally combined with a city tour: Güstrow Castle (Renaissance), the Cathedral with Ernst Barlach's "The Floating Man", the Ernst Barlach Studio on the Inselsee – the city is a cultural highlight in the Rostock district even in winter.
