The Concert
On June 19, 2026, at 7:00 PM, Güstrow Cathedral will transform into a concert hall with depth and resonance. The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern present "Piazzolla meets Brahms" in the city, a program that at first glance seems like a contrasting pair — and that's exactly why it works: Argentinian Nuevo Tango and North German late Romanticism touch upon their longing for form, line, and deep emotion.
Armida Quartett — Prize-winners in Residence
The Armida Quartett is one of the most sought-after string quartets of its generation. For the 2026 Festival Summer, the four musicians are "Prize-winners in Residence" — and can be experienced in over twenty concerts throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For their performance in Güstrow Cathedral, they will be joined by "Friends," a constellation featuring a bandoneon and other soloists, which are essential for the Piazzolla program.
Venue with Aura
Güstrow Cathedral is one of the most impressive sacred buildings in Northern Germany. A late Gothic brick rotunda, Ernst Barlach's famous "Schwebender" in its north chapel, outstanding acoustics. For chamber music of this caliber, it is a space where every phrase resonates — tango as well as romanticism.
Festival Summer 2026 — The Framework
The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern celebrate their 35th anniversary in 2026. Approximately 250 artists will perform at around 80 venues — from churches and monasteries to manor houses, castles, and open-air stages. The Festival Summer is one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most important cultural flagship.
