Long shopping night to kick off the Advent season
When the lights come on in Memmingen on the last Friday in November, the Advent season officially begins for the Swabian Imperial City. The historic city center with its colorful burgher houses, medieval towers, and charming squares is festively illuminated: facades gleam in the warm light, shop windows are elaborately decorated, and lanterns and Christmas bells adorn the pedestrian zone. It is the largest shopping night for Memmingen's retailers and, at the same time, a communal experience for the entire city.
The shops in the city center are open until 10 PM on Friday evening — a rare opportunity to search for Christmas gifts in a relaxed and festive atmosphere. Local boutiques, shops on the market square, fashion houses, and specialty stores participate. Many offer small promotions — mulled wine, cookies, personal advice — making shopping a winter experience.
The event traditionally kicks off with the Memmingen Christmas Wichteln (Christmas gift exchange) — a participatory event where Memmingen residents anonymously exchange small packages. The start of the Wichteln event is a fixed part of the Memmingen im Lichterglanz program.
Running parallel to the Lichterglanz, the Memminger Christkindlesmarkt takes place around the market square with extended opening hours until 11 PM. Stalls with handcrafted products, regional specialties, mulled wine, and punch complement the festive mood. Heated seating areas and hands-on activities make the market a family affair.
Memmingen is an independent city in the administrative region of Swabia (Bavaria) and one of the most beautiful Imperial Cities in Southern Germany. With St. Martin's Church, the Tax House, St. Frauen Church, and an almost completely preserved city wall, the city has a historic core that is particularly highlighted during Lichterglanz. Those who combine the evening with a stay should explore Memmingen's sights in daylight the next day.
On November 27, 2026, Memmingen opens its Advent season with Lichterglanz. The city center will be festively illuminated, shops will remain open until 10 PM, and the Christkindlesmarkt around the market square until 11 PM. With the Memmingen Christmas Wichteln, a participatory event with anonymous package exchange, one of Memmingen's most popular city traditions also begins. The event attracts thousands of visitors from the Allgäu, Unterallgäu, and the wider region to the Swabian Imperial City of Memmingen every year.
Memmingen is easily accessible by train from Munich (1:30 h), Ulm (45 min), and Stuttgart. About a 10-minute walk from the train station to the city center. By car via the A7 (exit Memmingen-Süd or -Nord). Parking garages in the city center; increased traffic during Lichterglanz — early arrival recommended.
Shops: until 10:00 PM. Memminger Christkindlesmarkt: until 11:00 PM. Restaurants in the city center with extended opening hours.
Free admission to the entire event. Memmingen Christmas Wichteln is a participatory event with no registration fee.
