One of the largest running events in the Allgäu region – a run through the historic Memmingen Old Town
The Memmingen Old Town Run has been one of the most important running events in the Allgäu region since its beginnings around the turn of the millennium – a region that, with the Memminger Allgäu-Airport-Lauf, the Wertach Half Marathon, the Allgäu Panorama Marathon, and other races, is among the most enthusiastic for running in Bavaria. In 2026, the 27th edition is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2026. The organizer is Sportverein Steinheim e.V., a traditional suburban club within the Memmingen community. Main sponsors are the Allgäu energy company LEW (Lechwerke) and AOK Bayern.
Memmingen, with around 45,000 inhabitants, is a Swabian medium-sized city in southern Bavaria and is considered the Gateway to the Allgäu. The historic imperial city with its late Gothic burgher houses, the famous 'Steuerhaus' at the market square, and the early modern city fortifications provides an extraordinary backdrop for a city run. Those who run through Theaterplatz, Schrannenplatz, past the Antoniterkloster, and along the historic alleys on the main course experience the Memmingen Old Town from a runner's perspective – an experience that clearly distinguishes the event from purely sports-oriented city runs.
Like many large city runs, the Memmingen Old Town Run is divided into several competition classes:
SV Steinheim – named after the Memmingen district of Steinheim – has borne the organizational burden of the event since its inception. Hundreds of volunteers, from course marking to results processing, are involved in the run. The cooperation with LEW and AOK secures the financial basis. The proceeds flow into youth and club activities.
The Old Town Run was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Running resumed in 2022, and the event has been running continuously since then – on September 15, 2024, September 21, 2025, and September 20, 2026.
In 2026, the Old Town Run celebrates its 27th edition. The start is traditionally at the market square, from where the main race leads through the late medieval alleys and historic squares of Memmingen's Old Town. The course is flat enough for good times, but culturally rich enough to appeal to pure hobby runners as well.
A well-organized, volunteer-run city race with a family atmosphere. Several distances for all levels, the classic Memmingen backdrop, and a camaraderie-filled atmosphere. Registration is recommended; late registration on the day itself is possible with a surcharge.
The start and finish area, as well as the exact route and start times for each discipline, will be published on mm-altstadtlauf.de. Online registration is available there.
By train: Memmingen station (IC connection from Augsburg, Lindau, Munich), from there approx. 5 minutes on foot to the market square. By car: A7 (exit Memmingen-Nord or -Süd), parking garages in the city center.
Online registration via mm-altstadtlauf.de. Late registration on the day of the event possible (with a surcharge).
