Solemn proclamation of the Memmingen Fischertag by the Stadtbüttel and Stadtgarde
The Memmingen Fischertag is one of the oldest and best-known city festivals in Southern Germany. The tradition dates back centuries: on the morning of the Fischertag, around 1,000 Memmingen residents fish the Stadtbach with traditional wooden fork nets — a ritual unique to Memmingen. The eve marks the solemn prelude with a grand ceremony.
From 5:00 PM, the historical groups of the Fischertagsverein Memmingen gather on the Marktplatz, all in the traditional costumes of their roles:
The Stadtbüttel and Stadtgarde officially proclaim the Fischertag, which takes place the following day. The drummers and fanfare bands then parade through the city center, setting the town in the mood for the grand Stadtbach fishing.
Memmingen is a former Free Imperial City in the Unterallgäu region (Bavarian Swabia), known for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval old town with its city wall, Steuerhaus, and town hall. The Twelve Articles of the Peasants of 1525 — a key document of the early democratic movement in Europe — were negotiated here. The Fischertag also takes place on this historic ground: the Stadtbach fishing on July 25th is a direct continuation of the Imperial City's civic tradition.
The organizer is the Fischertagsverein Memmingen, located at Am Einlaß 5½. The association is divided into several historical groups (Schmotzgruppe, Stadtgarde, Landsknechte, among others) and has documented the tradition for generations with extensive photo and video archives.
The 2026 edition of the Fischertagsvorabend follows the choreography passed down through generations. At 5:00 PM, the historical groups of the Fischertagsverein gather on Memmingen's Marktplatz. The official proclamation of the Fischertag by the Stadtbüttel and Stadtgarde is the formal highlight, setting the town in anticipation of the grand Stadtbach fishing on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
Advance tickets for the grandstands along the Stadtbach will be available from Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Memmingen Music School. Due to high demand, early arrival or a prior telephone inquiry to the Fischertagsverein (08331/495065) is recommended.
Memmingen is located in the Unterallgäu region, accessible via the A7 (Ulm–Füssen) and A96 (Munich–Lindau) motorways. By train (ICE/IC) at Memmingen station. Memmingen-Allgäu Airport (FMM) is approx. 6 km from the city center.
The proclamation on the Marktplatz from 5:00 PM is public and free to attend. Tickets for the grandstands along the Stadtbach for the fishing on the following day (July 25th) are sold separately.
Advance sales start July 6, 2026, at the Memmingen Music School. Detailed information from the Fischertagsverein (Tel. 08331/495065).
