About Fischertagsvorabend

The Fischertagsvorabend is the traditional prelude to the famous Memmingen Fischertag — a centuries-old tradition where, on the following day, around 1,000 Memmingen residents fish the Stadtbach (town stream) with wooden fork nets. On the eve, the Stadtbüttel (town beadle), Stadtgarde (town guard), drummers, fanfare band, and youth band, all in historical costumes, parade through the Swabian Imperial City to officially proclaim the Fischertag. Meeting point: Marktplatz Memmingen from 5:00 PM.

A Centuries-Old Swabian Tradition

The Memmingen Fischertag is one of the oldest and best-known city festivals in Southern Germany. The tradition dates back centuries: on the morning of the Fischertag, around 1,000 Memmingen residents fish the Stadtbach with traditional wooden fork nets — a ritual unique to Memmingen. The eve marks the solemn prelude with a grand ceremony.

What Happens on the Eve

From 5:00 PM, the historical groups of the Fischertagsverein Memmingen gather on the Marktplatz, all in the traditional costumes of their roles:

  • Stadtbüttel in medieval attire — historical town servant
  • Stadtgarde with halberds and uniforms
  • Trommlerbuben (drummer boys) to kick things off
  • Fanfarenzug (fanfare band) with historical trumpets
  • Jugendkapelle (youth band) with traditional festival music
  • Landsknechte and Schmotzgruppe as other groups of the association

The Stadtbüttel and Stadtgarde officially proclaim the Fischertag, which takes place the following day. The drummers and fanfare bands then parade through the city center, setting the town in the mood for the grand Stadtbach fishing.

Memmingen — Imperial City with Character

Memmingen is a former Free Imperial City in the Unterallgäu region (Bavarian Swabia), known for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval old town with its city wall, Steuerhaus, and town hall. The Twelve Articles of the Peasants of 1525 — a key document of the early democratic movement in Europe — were negotiated here. The Fischertag also takes place on this historic ground: the Stadtbach fishing on July 25th is a direct continuation of the Imperial City's civic tradition.

The Fischertagsverein

The organizer is the Fischertagsverein Memmingen, located at Am Einlaß 5½. The association is divided into several historical groups (Schmotzgruppe, Stadtgarde, Landsknechte, among others) and has documented the tradition for generations with extensive photo and video archives.

The 2026 edition of the Fischertagsvorabend follows the choreography passed down through generations. At 5:00 PM, the historical groups of the Fischertagsverein gather on Memmingen's Marktplatz.
