Four Annual Markets, One Tradition
The town of Waldsassen hosts four traditional markets per year: the Josephimarkt in March, the Walburgamarkt in May, the autumn/harvest market in September, and the Markttag zu Maximilian in October. Each of these market days is associated with the name of a saint and follows a long tradition of customs in the Upper Palatinate monastery town.
Saint Maximilian as the Namesake
The Markttag zu Maximilian is held in honor of Saint Maximilian and concludes the market year in Waldsassen. As the last of the four annual markets, it has a distinctly autumnal character and is closely interwoven with the region's harvest and autumn customs.
Venue: Johannisplatz
The venue is the Johannisplatz in the center of Waldsassen, not far from the famous Stiftsbasilika. Market stalls line up from 8:00 AM; the offerings range from sweets, flowers, and fish specialties to basketry and much more — a typical Franconian-Upper Palatinate annual market.
Sunday Shopping
The market day is accompanied by Sunday shopping: from 1:00 PM, the shops in the town center open, allowing market browsing and shopping to be combined. This dual character makes the day a strong draw for visitors from the entire Tirschenreuth district and the nearby Upper Palatinate Forest.
Part of the Waldsassen Annual Cycle
With its firm anchoring in autumn, the Markttag zu Maximilian is part of Waldsassen's cultural annual cycle and a living example of the enduring market customs in eastern Bavaria.
