Traditional festival in the Stiftland on the first Sunday in July
The Bürgerfest Waldsassen is part of the Stiftland identity – it has been held on the first Sunday in July since the 1980s and will celebrate its 44th edition in 2026. The event combines the summer life of a small town in the Oberpfalz with the unique backdrop of the baroque Stiftsbasilika Waldsassen and the Klostergasse.
The Bürgerfest begins at 11:00 AM with a star march: three brass bands march from different directions into the town center:
The three bands meet on Johannisplatz and play the piece “Larida” together as a musical festival opening.
The festival grounds extend from Basilikaplatz – where “Save the Scene” creates a festival atmosphere – across Johannisplatz, Kunstgasse, and Prinzregent-Luitpold-Straße down to the Stadtpark Schwanenwiese. Regional bands perform on several stages, clubs, businesses, and restaurateurs offer food and drinks, and children can find bouncy castles, games, and craft activities at Schwanenwiese.
Waldsassen is located in the district of Tirschenreuth in the northern Oberpfalz (Bavaria), directly on the Czech border (Eger / Cheb). The town is famous for its Stiftsbasilika and the adjacent Stiftsbibliothek with its Mannerist wood carvings. The Bürgerfest consciously incorporates this backdrop – nowhere else in Bavaria does a town festival take place so directly between a basilica, a city park, and the border.
The 44th Bürgerfest Waldsassen 2026 takes place, as always, on the first Sunday in July – Sunday, July 5, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM. The venue is the entire old town between the Stiftsbasilika and Stadtpark Schwanenwiese.
The traditional opening is the star march by the brass bands: the Münchenreuther Bauernkapelle, the Stadtkapelle Waldsassen, and the Stiftländer Jugend- und Blaskapelle march from different directions into the town center and meet on Johannisplatz, where they play the piece “Larida” together.
The festival grounds extend from Basilikaplatz – where “Save the Scene” provides a festival atmosphere – across Johannisplatz, Kunstgasse, and Prinzregent-Luitpold-Straße down to Stadtpark Schwanenwiese. Several stages, stalls from Waldsassen clubs and businesses, culinary offerings from regional to international, and a children's area at Schwanenwiese (bouncy castles, games, craft activities) characterize the day. Free admission.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds. Food and drinks are paid for directly at the stalls.
By car: A93 Regensburg–Hof, exit Waldsassen / Wiesau. By train: Waldsassen station (line Marktredwitz–Cheb). Parking available on the outskirts of town.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds. Food and drinks are paid for on-site.
Before or after the festival, a visit to the Stiftsbibliothek Waldsassen is worthwhile – one of the most impressive baroque library interiors in Germany.
