Five days of Volksfest on Angerplatz in the Fichtelgebirge
The Marktredwitzer Schützenfest is one of the regular summer events in the northern Upper Palatinate. Celebrations last for five days on the central Festplatz Angerplatz in the middle of Marktredwitz: from the Thursday evening of the setup until the festival Sunday with the grand parade of the Schützenvereine — a familiar pattern where Volksfest and shooting tradition merge.
With around 17,000 inhabitants, Marktredwitz is one of the larger towns in the Wunsiedel district of the Fichtelgebirge. The town lies at the transition between Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate and is considered an important transport hub towards the Czech Republic. Its location between Fichtelberg, Kösseine, and Egerland shapes its convivial and cultural life — the Schützenfest is one of its most visible symbols.
As with comparable Volksfeste in the region, the festival tent, amusement rides, and club life form the established framework. The Marktredwitz Schützenvereine — as hosts and as the festival society — are the bearers of the shooting tradition, from the opening day to the festival parade on the main Kirchweih (church consecration festival) day, which traditionally marks the last Sunday of the festival. In the beer tent, brass bands play, and on weekends, dance bands; on the festival grounds, carousels, a roller coaster, and a Ferris wheel turn.
For centuries, Schützenvereine have shaped club life in Bavaria. Their annual Schützenfest has two sides: the sporting king's shoot with the proclamation of the new royal family and the public festival weekend with a festival tent, parade, and festival catering. In Marktredwitz, this dual character is vibrantly lived out in the summer.
The 2026 Schützenfest in Marktredwitz follows the proven schedule of previous years: opening on Thursday evening with the tapping of the first keg, a festival weekend with a beer tent program and exuberant atmosphere, and on Sunday, the grand parade of the Schützenvereine. The festival concludes with Family Monday featuring reduced amusement ride prices.
More detailed information — band program, festival caterer, parade route — will be published by the town of Marktredwitz and the participating Schützenvereine in the weeks before the festival in the local press and the municipal gazette.
The detailed schedule and band program will be published on the Marktredwitz town website before the festival.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks in the beer tent at usual Volksfest prices (liter of beer between €9 and €11, half chicken approx. €12–€15). Amusement rides €3–€8 per ride; reduced on Family Monday.
Marktredwitz main station is on the line Nuremberg–Marktredwitz–Hof or Marktredwitz–Cheb. The station is only a 10-minute walk from the Angerplatz festival grounds. By car, take the A93 (Marktredwitz exit).
