A Christmas Market with Two Faces
The district town of St. Wendel in the St. Wendel district – also the hometown of one of the most famous Saarlanders of all time, Saint Wendelin – has created one of the most unusual Advent events in Germany: a Christmas market that is both a classic Advent market and a medieval market. Both worlds merge where the alleys of the town center transition into the historic Mott area.
150 Stalls and All the Classics
In the modern part of the market, over 150 decorated stalls present the full spectrum of Saarland and German Christmas culture: mulled wine stands, crêpes, bratwurst and lyoner specialties, roasted almonds, regional honey, Advent wreaths, candles, jewelry, wood carvings, and arts and crafts gifts. In addition, there is a giant Christmas pyramid with life-size nativity figures, a nostalgic carousel, and a sledding hill for children.
In the Mott Area: Middle Ages
Anyone entering the Mott area – the former masonry grounds of the town fortifications – enters another world. In the medieval market, there are wooden stalls with fur blankets, open fires burn, and hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes sound. Blacksmiths demonstrate their work, basket weavers and felt makers demonstrate old crafts, and visitors can participate in archery and axe throwing.
In the evenings, there are fire shows, acrobats, jugglers, and tower musicians who move through the squares. A night watchman tour starting at 7 p.m. leads with lanterns through the historic town and explains the medieval history of St. Wendel.
The Dwarf Forest
A trademark of the St. Wendel market is the Dwarf Forest: Over 300 handmade dwarfs populate their own installation, along with a living nativity scene with real animals and large nutcracker figures that serve as popular photo opportunities. The concept explicitly targets families with children – this is one of the market's most important target groups.
Top 10 in the German-Speaking World
Tourism rating portals and travel blogs regularly count the St. Wendel market among the Top 10 most beautiful Christmas markets in the German-speaking world – a remarkable achievement for a market in a town of 25,000 inhabitants. The reason: the unique combination of a historic town center, a medieval section, and a lovingly staged family program.
