Traditional Spring Volksfest on the Naab — Festival Tent, Rides, and Upper Palatinate Beer
The Maidult Burglengenfeld is the most important spring Volksfest (people's festival) in the town of Burglengenfeld, located in the district of Schwandorf (Upper Palatinate). It kicks off the Volksfest season in the region and has been a local tradition for generations. "Dult" — the Upper Palatinate-Bavarian word for "Volksfest" — is etymologically derived from a market and festival day.
Burglengenfeld is situated on the Naab river, between Schwandorf and Regensburg. The town, with its approximately 13,600 inhabitants, is an industrial center (cement, mechanical engineering) and an administrative hub in the western part of the district. The Naab valley, with its forests, hills, and idyllic floodplain landscape, provides the scenic backdrop — the festival grounds themselves are located directly on the river.
The Maidult lasts for ten days, spanning two weekends plus several weekdays. The festival tent, run by local hosts, is the main venue — daily catering, live music on weekends with popular bands, brass bands, and occasional larger acts.
Around the festival tent, showmen set up their attractions — classics like bumper cars, Ferris wheel, chain carousel, haunted house, as well as children's rides, shooting galleries, candy stalls, gingerbread hearts, bratwurst, and snack stands. A classic Bavarian Dult atmosphere, similar to that found at Munich's Auer Mai- and Herbst-Dult — just on a smaller, village-near-town scale.
Upper Palatinate beer flows in the festival tent — the region between the Naab and Danube rivers is one of Germany's most traditional brewing landscapes. Burglengenfeld itself and the surrounding villages have several small and medium-sized breweries.
In Burglengenfeld's annual program, the Maidult alternates with other folk festivals. In June, the Italian Night follows; in August (every three years), the grand Civic Festival; in November/December, the Christmas Market. The Maidult opens this season.
The 2026 edition of the Maidult kicks off the Upper Palatinate Volksfest season from April 24th to May 3rd, 2026. Ten days of festivities at the festival grounds directly on the Naab — featuring the local hosts' festival tent, live music on weekends, showman attractions, and the typical atmosphere of a Bavarian Volksfest.
The Maidult traditionally opens on Friday evening with a beer tapping ceremony by the mayor or another dignitary. The rides and stalls around the festival tent are in operation throughout. On weekends, bands play in the festival tent; on weekdays, festivities continue with brass music or a DJ.
The exact stage and band program will be published shortly before the Maidult on burglengenfeld.de.
Admission to the festival grounds and festival tent is generally free. Pay for ride tickets, food, and drinks directly at the stalls. For special concerts on weekends, a moderate admission fee may be charged for the festival tent — information on the festival website.
