Traditional May festival on the eve of May 1st
While the Maypole tradition is primarily rooted in Southern Germany and Austria, a distinct, simpler version has established itself in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. In Schafflund, a municipality of around 2,300 inhabitants in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg on the Danish border, the Walpurgis Night tradition is maintained as a communal village festival — without tree marriages, but with broad participation from the entire village.
The festival site is the courtyard of the Alte Mühlenscheune — a historic farm building that now serves as a venue for the village community. Here, the Schafflund Civic Association opens its doors annually on April 30th for the Maibaumfest. In parallel, the village archive and the historic Wassermühle Schafflund — a technical monument that keeps the history of mill operation on the Linnau River alive — also open.
The highlight is the Maypole erection at 6:30 PM: the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schafflund (Schafflund Volunteer Fire Department) uses its equipment to help erect the often several-meter-high decorated pole. This is not just a show — it's a technical maneuver requiring experience and teamwork, symbolically involving the entire village community.
After the erection, the actual festival begins. The FFW grills for everyone, children get glitter tattoos, and the newly founded dart club Nordlicht Darter e.V. offers games for young and old. This is pure village festival: no admission fee, local actors, self-organization, celebrating together. In the district of Schleswig-Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Schafflund thus preserves a tradition that has disappeared in many parts of Northern Germany.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional choreography: Welcome by the Civic Association, Maypole erection with the Schafflund FFW, followed by a communal celebration in the courtyard of the Alte Mühlenscheune.
By car via the A7 (exit Flensburg) or via Niebüll. By bus from surrounding communities (Flensburg, Husum).
Free admission. Food and drinks charged at stand prices.
Before the festival, visit the historic water mill (open during the festival) and take a look at the village archive.
