Traditional Schafflund Christmas Market on the 2nd Advent around the Alte Mühlenscheune
Schafflund is located in the north of the Schleswig-Flensburg district, near the Danish border. With around 2,600 inhabitants, the municipality is the administrative seat of the Schafflund office and one of the centers of the North Frisian Geest region. The annual HGV-Weihnachtsmarkt Schafflund has long been a firm fixture in the region's Advent calendar — it traditionally takes place on the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
In 2026, the 2nd Sunday of Advent falls on December 13th. On this day, the mill ensemble, with its restored water wheel, the community hall, and the Alte Mühlenscheune, transforms into an Advent backdrop — a combination of historic architecture and cozy market atmosphere that gives the Schafflund market its special character.
The HGV has been organizing the market for years with a set rhythm:
HGV members man the grill, serve punch and pea soup, or offer cakes and tarts. The homemade Quarkbällchen (quark balls) are among the bestsellers every year. In addition, local artisans and small manufacturers from Schafflund present gift items, handicrafts, and Advent decorations.
The HGV-Weihnachtsmarkt stands alongside other Northern German Advent classics that preserve the essence of rural folk festival culture — community-based, voluntary, without commercial interests in the background. Part of the tombola proceeds goes to local social projects. Schafflund is conveniently located between Flensburg and Niebüll — many guests from the surrounding North Frisian area and the Danish border region come to Schafflund for a Sunday outing.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven format of the Schafflund classic. The market opens on Sunday, December 13, from 11:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM — precisely the classic Sunday hours that allow for a relaxed Advent visit without haste.
At exactly 12:00 PM, Santa Claus stops on his tour through the Schleswig Geest at the mill ensemble and distributes small gifts to the children. The tombola with an e-scooter as the main prize and numerous other prizes traditionally attracts many visitors — tickets are sold directly at the HGV stand, and the prize draws take place at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 4 PM.
Train: To Flensburg or Niebüll, then by bus to Schafflund. Car: B199 between Flensburg and Niebüll, exit Schafflund. Parking spaces are signposted around the mill ensemble.
Admission is free. Food, drinks, and tombola tickets are available at market prices. Tombola tickets can be purchased directly at the HGV stand.
