Traditional festival of the Osterby Totengilde at the Old Train Station
The Totengilde is a North German rural tradition with deep historical roots. Originally, Totengilden were communities whose members mutually secured burials: in times without state social systems, members' contributions paid for the honorable burial of each deceased person. Over the centuries, these guilds have transformed into social clubs — for many, the annual Gildefest has become the most important social event of the village.
In Osterby, the Totengilde meets every year in the summer. The festival begins on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM at the Old Train Station — a historic station building that now serves as an event venue. The day follows a sequence developed over generations, incorporating the traditional elements of North German guild culture: a festive parade through the village, a shooting competition to determine a new king or queen, a communal lunch, and an evening guild ball.
Osterby is a municipality with around 1,700 inhabitants in the Amt Hürup in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. The region lies between Flensburg and the Danish border — a landscape transitional zone where a dense network of clubs, volunteer engagement, and traditional customs shape daily village life. In addition to the Totengilde, Osterby also has a village festival community that organizes the large Dorffest Osterby in August — both associations are firmly anchored in local life.
As with most Gildefeste in Schleswig-Holstein, the Osterby festival has a dual function: it is a convivial weekend event with dancing and catering, but at the same time, it is the most important opportunity of the year for the village community to come together. Long-time residents and newcomers, older and younger generations — everyone gathers on the guild day. This is the social significance of the guilds far beyond their formal duties.
The early start at 8:00 AM is typical for North German Gildefeste — members gather in the morning for preparation and a traditional breakfast. The day then progresses from the parade and shooting competition to the evening ball, which often lasts late into the night.
