A Homage to Cabbage

The Lommatzscher Pflege is considered one of Saxony's most fertile agricultural regions – the climate and the loess soil make it the breadbasket of the state. Cabbage, in many varieties, is one of the region's traditional products. The Lummscher Krautmarkt celebrates this tradition and makes it tangible for visitors.

Over 20 Cabbage Stalls

At the stalls, producers offer white cabbage in various forms: whole heads, sauerkraut, Krautwurst, Krautpfanne, Krautnudeln, and other specialties. The company Risse Rohkonserven demonstrates traditional cabbage shredding with a historical machine – a true living history lesson about regional processing traditions.

Connected to the Church Harvest Thanksgiving Festival

The market traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in September and is linked to the church Erntedankfest. This creates a double festive atmosphere: a church service for Harvest Thanksgiving in the morning, followed by the cabbage market in the marketplace.

In the Meißen District, Saxony

Lommatzsch is located in the Meißen district (AGS 14627), Saxony, north of Meißen and west of Dresden, in the heart of the Lommatzscher Pflege region. The town, with around 5,000 inhabitants, is the center of the rural area between the Elbe and Mulde rivers. The Krautmarkt is an important element of identity for the Lommatzscher Pflege.
