Around 90 artisans on the third weekend of August on Friedensplatz
Friedensplatz is located in the heart of Darmstadt, framed by the city center, the theater, and the Hessian State Museum. This central location becomes the focal point for the arts and crafts scene of Southern Hesse and beyond for one weekend in August each year. The Darmstadt Arts and Crafts Market is not just a sales event, but a curated exhibition of works – each stand is also a small workshop showcase.
Approximately 90 exhibitors present their work. The spectrum is deliberately broad: jewelry with special designs and high-quality craftsmanship, ceramics ranging from functional objects to sculptures, unique handmade fashion, wood and metal works – from forged steel to finely carved sculptures, leather, textiles, and bookbinding crafts. Upcycling manufacturers and experimental material combinations are also represented.
What sets this market apart from industrial design fairs is the opportunity to talk directly with the creators. Many exhibitors work at their stands – whether forging metal, crafting jewelry, or carving wood – and share the stories behind their pieces. Some offer custom adjustments for jewelry or personalized text.
Darmstadt, with its reputation as a Science City and a city of Art Nouveau (UNESCO World Heritage Mathildenhöhe), provides an ideal setting for a curated arts and crafts market. Those wishing to extend their visit can explore the Hessian State Museum right next door, the Art Nouveau ensemble on Mathildenhöhe, or the Castle in the city center after browsing the market.
The market has consistently taken place on the third weekend of August for years, making it a reliable summer fixture for collectors, gift seekers, and anyone tired of mass-produced goods. In 2026, the date falls on August 15th and 16th.
The 2026 edition follows the proven format: Friedensplatz opens its doors on Saturday and Sunday to around 90 exhibitors, many of whom work live at their stands. Direct exchange with the creators is part of the concept.
