One of Germany's most important classical festivals — opera, ballet, concerts, and facade dance at Ludwigsburg Residential Palace
The Ludwigsburg Palace Festival was founded in 1932 and has since been one of Germany's oldest and most renowned classical festivals. Venue: the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace in the Ludwigsburg district (AGS 08118) — one of the largest preserved Baroque palaces in Europe, often called the "Swabian Versailles." The festival unfolds season after season within the palace's 452 rooms, several halls, and its park. The 2026 season runs from June 12 to August 5, featuring a total of 90 performances over 54 days.
Artistic Director is Lucas Reuter, who curates the festival with an explicit European program concept. "Europe is not a territory, but a cultural spirit" — thus Reuter's motto. The 2026 season accordingly emphasizes European collaboration, bringing ensembles from Spain, Monaco, Great Britain, and pan-European youth together.
The festival artist for 2026 is the German painter Hann Trier (1915–1999) — a representative of lyrical-abstract painting, whose work, according to Reuter, combines "baroque sensuality with experimental openness." Trier's paintings will be exhibited in the palace and shape the visual identity of the season.
Two opera productions are at the center:
The dance program brings two of Europe's leading ballet companies to Ludwigsburg:
A spectacular program feature: the facade dance "Danza Verticale." Dancers, secured by ropes, perform on the facade of the Residential Palace — a vertical choreography against the baroque facade, transforming the palace into a dynamic stage. One of the highlights of the 2026 season.
The festival concludes with the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) — an orchestra formed annually from the best young musicians from all EU member states. "An ensemble that transcends national origin," says Reuter — the ideal final chord of a festival that understands itself as European.
Artistic Director Lucas Reuter dedicates the 2026 festival to "European collaboration." Festival artist is the painter Hann Trier. The season runs for eight weeks with a dense program of opera, concerts, dance, and facade dance.
Additionally, around 70 other performances: chamber music concerts, solo recitals, children's programs, lectures, and special events.
