Try out sports, join in, get to know them — free and for everyone at Königsplatz
The Munich Sports Festival is the city of Munich's largest public sports event for trying things out yourself. Over 50 clubs and sports associations set up stations at Königsplatz where visitors can try out disciplines — free of charge, no registration required, equipment provided free of charge. In 2026, the 15th edition will take place on Sunday, July 5, from 10 am to 6 pm.
The range of sports presented includes established disciplines (Badminton, Lacrosse, Judo, Football, Tennis, Table Tennis), trend sports (Skimboarding, Pickleball, Padel, Frisbee Golf, Crossfit), precision sports (Archery, Darts, Chess), as well as skate and roll disciplines. In recent editions, Ninja Sport (a diverse obstacle course inspired by the American format 'American Ninja Warrior') has been a magnet for young people.
A hallmark of the Munich Sports Festival is its consistent focus on inclusion: Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Goalball (team sport for the visually impaired), and other para-sports disciplines are presented equally alongside 'classic' sports. Visitors with and without disabilities can try everything — a concept that is rather rare in Germany, and which made the event a model project for Special Olympics Germany from 2018–2022.
In previous years, Olympians and top athletes have been present as festival ambassadors — they performed demonstrations, signed autographs, and answered questions. The fact that the Sports Festival takes place against the monumental backdrop of the Glyptothek and the Staatliche Antikensammlungen (Königsplatz) gives the event an additional urban dramatic flair — which contrasts with the sports stations.
The festival is organized and financed by the Department for Education and Sport of the City of Munich. The city views sport as a central instrument for social participation, especially for young people from families with less affinity for sports. The free and low-threshold format is part of this strategy — and an example of how a major city actively promotes club memberships for its citizens.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on muenchen.de and sportfestival.de — July 5, 2026, 10 am–6 pm, Königsplatz. As in previous years, the event brings over 50 clubs and sports associations from the Munich area to the square, all with their own stands and free hands-on activities. It's not a classic sports event with competitions, but an introductory event: clubs showcase sports, visitors try them out, and information about club memberships is available on-site.
The full program, including the list of 50+ participating clubs, will be published on sportfestival.de in the weeks leading up to the festival — the final list changes from year to year, as smaller regional clubs also join.
