Nature experience day in Bekow — discover urban nature in the heart of West Mecklenburg
The Long Day of Urban Nature is a nationwide event format that brings people closer to nature in their immediate surroundings. In Hagenow, the second-largest town in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, the action day takes place in the Bekow nature reserve — a natural area right on the edge of the city, which, with its meadows, waters, and a popular circular hiking trail, is one of West Mecklenburg's green treasures.
The focus is on guided nature experiences. A beekeeper presents his equipment and leads visitors to a bee colony in Bekow — a hike of about four kilometers, during which the life of honeybees is vividly explained. On a herb walk, participants learn about local wild herbs, their identification, and uses. Water explorations make the flora and fauna of streams and ponds visible.
At a central meeting point — the welcome plaza — the city of Hagenow and local clubs and actors present themselves with information and regional products. Among them are the school apiary of a Hagenow school, a regional farm, and the local angling club. For children, there are hands-on activities such as building nesting boxes, so that even the youngest guests can actively get to know nature.
The Long Day of Urban Nature in Hagenow is not only an experience day but also a contribution to nature conservation: it makes local biodiversity visible and shows how much nature is contained within a small town. Additionally, further tours are offered in the region around the event — such as cycling tours along the Elbe, which combine nature and history of the former inner-German border area.
The 2026 edition of the Long Day of Urban Nature continues Hagenow's tradition of making the nature of the Bekow nature reserve an experience. Guided beekeeper tours to a bee colony, herb walks with identification of local wild plants, water explorations, and information stands by local actors at the welcome plaza are planned again. For children, hands-on activities such as building nesting boxes are planned. The exact event date and the final program overview will be announced in advance — the programs of the participating locations are traditionally published a few weeks before the action day.
The complete program will be published before the action day.
