Traditional market on the Sunday after Corpus Christi
The Prangermarkt Schwarzach belongs to the traditional family of Krammärkte — historic market forms that evolved from the traveling merchant traditions of the Middle Ages and early modern period. "Kram" referred to the diverse assortment that the traders carried in their carts: everything that was needed in a rural household, what was not available in the local markets of the region. Schwarzach is a small market town in the Bavarian Forest (district of Straubing-Bogen, Bavaria) with a historic market square that forms the backdrop for the Prangermarkt.
The date follows the Catholic festival calendar: Corpus Christi (Thursday after Trinity Sunday, 60 days after Easter) is a public holiday in Bavaria with processions and church festivals. The Prangermarkt takes place on the Sunday after Corpus Christi. In 2026, Corpus Christi falls on June 4 — the Prangermarkt therefore on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The connection to Corpus Christi is no coincidence: in Catholic tradition, the Prangermarkt was often celebrated in the run-up to Corpus Christi week, as farmers and craftsmen from the surrounding villages streamed into the market.
The range of goods at the Prangermarkt covers the entire spectrum of classic market tradition: leather goods (belts, bags, footwear), traditional costume and textiles (Dirndl, Lederhosen, fabrics), toys (wooden toys, dolls), spices from around the world, jewelry of regional manufacture, cheese and smoked goods from the Bavarian Forest, baked goods such as gingerbread and bread, basketry, rakes, and household goods. Some stalls have offered the same assortment for generations, a living piece of market craft history.
The venue is the historic market square of Schwarzach, a small, almost intact market settlement in the Bavarian Forest. The stalls are arranged around the central square, past old townhouses and the rectory. In the background, the parish church, whose bells rhythmically accompany the day. Parking spaces are available around the market (30 car spaces, 5 bus spaces), toilets on site.
Traditionally, the Prangermarkt is accompanied by the Schwarzach Volksfest around Corpus Christi. Thus, the weekend offers a double festival culture: market atmosphere on Sunday, plus the Volksfest with a festival tent, beer garden, and amusement stalls on the weekend or in the following days. Both events are part of the festival calendar of the Lower Bavarian market town of Schwarzach and are coordinated by the local tourist information office.
The 2026 edition follows centuries-old tradition: on the Sunday after Corpus Christi, the historic market square of Schwarzach transforms into a lively Krammarkt. Stalls are arranged around the square and along the adjacent streets, in an atmosphere reminiscent of medieval and early modern market traditions.
Visitors come from Schwarzach, neighboring communities in the Straubing-Bogen district, the wider Bavarian Forest, and the Lower Bavarian Danube region. The combination of market tradition (Prangermarkt) and festival tradition (Schwarzach Volksfest in the same week) makes the Corpus Christi weekend a central date in the local festival calendar.
