Advent market on the Rathausplatz in southern Mecklenburg
Hagenow, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, is the seventh-largest town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and an important transport hub between Schwerin and Hamburg. In the middle of the old town, around the classicist town hall, the Hagenower Weihnachtsmarkt opens every year – a classic North German Advent market with honest ingredients: wooden stalls, light arches, fir trees, and straw, a nativity scene, a large Christmas tree in front of the town hall.
On the Rathausplatz, you'll find mulled wine stands, bratwurst and Soljanka chefs, crêpes, "Mutzen", cakes, Langosh, and garlic bread – a selection typical of the region's markets. In addition, there is handicrafts from Mecklenburg, candles, jewelry, and woodwork. School and town choirs, dance groups, and brass choirs from Hagenow and the surrounding area perform on the small stage.
The carousel in the market is a classic for families, as are the pony rides that the market traditionally offers. St. Nicholas visits at least once. Parents particularly appreciate that the market is manageable and safe – everything takes place within a few hundred square meters.
Hagenow has remained a farmer's town, with a preserved classicist townscape. From the Rathausplatz, you can reach St. Marien Church and the historic apartment buildings along the main street in a few steps. Those who combine the market with a city walk will get to know one of the most charming small towns in Southwest Mecklenburg.
As every year, wooden huts, light arches, and fir decorations transform the Rathausplatz into a small Christmas village. Mulled wine, bratwurst, crêpes, Soljanka, and Mutzen are part of it, as is handicrafts from Mecklenburg. School choirs, dance groups, and brass choirs from the town perform on stage – and St. Nicholas traditionally pays a visit.
The exact stage program and the list of vendors for 2026 will be published in the second half of November at hagenow.de/veranstaltungen.
