Three nights of light art with projections on Augsburg's historic buildings
Light Nights Augsburg is part of the larger Festival of Lights network and has been a firm fixture in Augsburg's event calendar since 2022. The concept: light installations, projections, and animations transform the historic city center into an open art space over three consecutive October evenings. Unlike traditional stage festivals, visitors can explore the city on foot and discover the installations at their own pace.
The installations are spread across central squares and buildings in Augsburg's city center – including Rathausplatz, Maximilianstraße, Fuggerei, and the Augsburg Town Hall with its iconic Golden Hall. Augsburg, one of Germany's oldest cities and home to the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Augsburg Water Management System', thus offers a particularly rich architectural backdrop for projection formats.
The Light Nights run for three evenings from 7 PM to 11 PM. Light artists from Germany and abroad create installations using a wide variety of techniques: video mapping on facades, interactive LED installations, kinetic light sculptures, and large-scale animations. Admission is free, and the trail is self-explanatory through the city center.
Augsburg is an independent city in the administrative region of Swabia (AGS 09761) and the seat of the Bavarian District Government of Swabia. The Light Nights complement the city's cultural program with a modern, accessible format and position Augsburg on the map of European light art festivals.
Three nights of light art in Augsburg: From October 16 to 18, 2026, the Light Nights will run from 7 PM to 11 PM each evening. Light artists from Germany and abroad will create installations and projections on the historic buildings of Augsburg's city center.
The trail is designed to be self-explanatory and is freely accessible. A festival map is available on the Festival of Lights website; the city of Augsburg recommends arriving by public transport, as the city center is very busy during the event.
By train via ICE/IC to Augsburg Hauptbahnhof, then a few minutes' walk to the city center. Travel by public transport is recommended during the Light Nights.
Free admission. The trail is self-explanatory through the city center. A map is available online at festival-of-lights.de.
