About Sommerbühne Brunnenhof

In the middle of Augsburg's old town, the Brunnenhof of the historic Zeughaus is transformed into an open stage for the independent scene every summer. From early June to the end of August, a curated program of music, literature, theatre, and pop culture takes place here – free of charge and under the open sky. In 2026, the Sommerbühne will run from June 5th to August 29th. It is curated by the Office for Pop Culture of the City of Augsburg, which provides the performance space free of charge to musicians, bands, reading stages, and performance artists.

A Summer Stage for the Independent Scene

The Sommerbühne in the Brunnenhof was launched in 2020, when the pandemic brought the cultural scene to a standstill, and has since developed into a regular Augsburg summer event. It is part of the Augsburg City Summer and is organised by the Office for Pop Culture in the City of Augsburg's Cultural Department.

The Venue: Brunnenhof im Zeughaus

The Zeughaus on Zeugplatz is one of Augsburg's most significant Renaissance buildings. Its inner courtyard, the Brunnenhof, is an enclosed, atmospheric performance space in the middle of Augsburg's old town – just a few steps from Rathausplatz and Maximilianstraße. The courtyard is suitable for intimate concerts, readings, and performances in the open evening light.

What Happens Here

The program is deliberately broad. A typical season includes indie, blues, and soul concerts, chanson and singer-songwriter evenings, reggae and world music sets, jazz formats, reading stages, and poetry slams, participatory community concerts (e.g., KaraUke, an open ukulele event), children's concerts, and smaller theatre and dance productions. The Sommerbühne also serves as a venue for the Lange Kunstnacht (Long Night of Art) and participates in the Augsburger Jazzsommer (Augsburg Jazz Summer).

Free and For Everyone

The central idea: Artists from Augsburg and the region receive a professionally equipped stage at no cost, and the audience gets three months of high-quality culture without an entrance fee. The city sees the format as a contribution to cultural participation in a city where the independent scene often struggles to find stages between the Mozart Festival, the Brecht Festival, and the Peace Festival.

Augsburg, Bavarian-Swabia, and the City Summer

With almost 300,000 inhabitants, Augsburg is Bavaria's third-largest city and the capital of the Swabia administrative region. The Sommerbühne is part of a diverse summer program (Augsburger Stadtsommer), which also includes the Augsburger Jazzsommer, the Friedensfest, and the Plärrer (a Volksfest). Anyone in the city in July or August can end up in the Brunnenhof almost every Thursday to Saturday.

Sommerbühne Brunnenhof — edition 2026

From June 5th to August 29th, 2026, the Brunnenhof at the Zeughaus Augsburg will once again be the venue for the Sommerbühne. For three months, Augsburg's independent cultural scene will perform here for free in the open air: music evenings, readings, theatre nights, pop culture. Curated by the Office for Pop Culture of the City of Augsburg.

2026 Edition — Three Months Open Air

The 2026 season runs from June 5th to August 29th and is again part of the Augsburg City Summer. The exact program will be released by the Office for Pop Culture in several installments after the application deadline for independent artists on March 18th, 2026. As in previous years, admission to all events is free.

Format and Variety

The Sommerbühne brings together concerts (indie, jazz, blues, reggae, singer-songwriter, world music), readings and poetry formats, small theatre and performance evenings, and participatory special formats. In 2026, it will again participate in the Augsburger Lange Kunstnacht and the Jazzsommer.

Performance Times

Events mainly take place on Thursday to Saturday evenings, usually starting at 7:30 PM / 8:00 PM. Individual dates can be found at augsburg.de/brunnenhof.
