Traditional pottery market in Amberg's Old Town – with Sunday shopping, beer festival, and duck race
The Krüglmarkt in Amberg is one of the oldest pottery markets in the Oberpfalz region. Already in the early 17th century, potters from the region traded their earthenware in Amberg. After a long break, the market was revived in 1987 – since then, it has become a fixed date in Amberg's spring calendar, attracting numerous exhibitors and visitors from all over Bavaria every year.
The Krüglmarkt is consistently positioned as a market for handcrafted ceramics. Industrial goods are expressly not permitted. The range includes functional tableware (plates, cups, bowls, jugs) and decorative items such as vases and sculptures, as well as garden ceramics and ceramic jewelry. Many exhibitors return to Amberg year after year – the connection to the market has grown over decades.
The market around St. George's Church references the dragon legend of Saint George: the dragon has become the secret mascot of the Krüglmarkt and adorns numerous stalls. Since 2023, the market has taken place on Malteserplatz and the adjacent Georgenstraße – right in the heart of Amberg's historic city center with its medieval city walls and gates.
The Krüglmarkt is traditionally accompanied by a packed festival weekend. On Saturday, the Amberger Bierfest takes place on the Bleichwiese: all six Amberg breweries – Bruckmüller, Kummert, Schloderer, Sterk, Sudhang, and Winkler – serve their beers, accompanied by music bands. On Sunday, the shops in the city center open for Sunday shopping; at the same time, Round Table 69 Amberg organizes the popular duck race in the Vils river, which starts at the bridge in Fronfestgasse.
Amberg is an independent city in the Oberpfalz region (State of Bavaria) with just under 43,000 inhabitants. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval cityscapes in Southern Germany, characterized by the "Stadtbrillen" motif, where the Vils river is spanned by two arches. The Krüglmarkt uses this historic backdrop to create a special market atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of the Krüglmarkt will take place on the weekend of April 25 and 26. On Malteserplatz and in Georgenstraße, ceramists from the region and all over Southern Germany will exhibit their handmade pottery. The weekend is embedded in Amberg's "XXL Festival Weekend" with the Beer Festival, Sunday shopping, and the duck race.
On Saturday, the market opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Simultaneously, the Beer Festival runs on the Bleichwiese next to the Amberg Congress Center (ACC) from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.: all six Amberg breweries (Bruckmüller, Kummert, Schloderer, Sterk, Sudhang, and Winkler) are represented. On Sunday, the Krüglmarkt opens at 11 a.m., and at the same time, the shops in the city center open for Sunday shopping. At 3 p.m., the duck race starts in the Vils river at the bridge in Fronfestgasse.
Admission to the Krüglmarkt is free. Admission to the Beer Festival is also free – beer and food at usual festival prices. Raffle tickets for the duck race can be purchased from Round Table 69 Amberg.
