Advent in a Historic Setting
The Amberger Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the most atmospheric Advent markets in the Upper Palatinate. The venue is the market square in the heart of the historic old town, directly next to the Gothic St. Martin's Basilica. The medieval architecture and the decorated stalls create a particularly romantic atmosphere.
Scents, Lights, and Tradition
The scent of roasted almonds, gingerbread, grilled bratwurst, and punch wafts through the market. The stalls offer handicrafts, gift ideas, and regional specialties. A historic steam carousel with animal figures delights the youngest visitors, and from Thursday to Sunday, horse-drawn carriage rides from the afternoon onwards invite you for a cozy tour through the old town.
Music and Program
A changing musical program – from trombone choirs to choirs to live performances – accompanies the entire market period. The festive opening with the mayor, musical accompaniment, and a children's program traditionally marks the start. The market runs from the last weekend in November until December 23rd and is a firm Advent ritual for many families.

From November 26th to December 23rd, 2026, Amberg's Market Square will once again transform into a romantic Christmas market. The official opening is scheduled for Thursday, November 26th, 2026, at 3 PM. Opening hours are Monday–Wednesday 10 AM–8 PM, Thursday–Saturday 10 AM–9 PM, and Sunday 1 PM–8 PM.
Among the permanent attractions are the historic steam carousel with animal figures, horse-drawn carriage rides from Thursday to Sunday starting in the afternoon, and a varied live music program. An official app with an Advent calendar will accompany the market.
