Christopher Street Day in the Upper Palatinate Vils metropolis
When you hear 'Christopher Street Day,' you first think of Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich. But queer visibility has also grown in the more rural regions of Bavaria — and CSD Amberg has been the most important queer date in the northern Upper Palatinate for years. In a region known for its conservative character, every CSD is a political statement and, at the same time, a celebration of visibility, courage, and solidarity.
The organizer is the non-profit association Kunterbunt Amberg e.V., which promotes queer educational work, anti-discrimination, and equality in the region. CSD Amberg is the association's most important public event, supplemented by counseling services, groups, and networking meetings throughout the year.
CSD 2026 — like in Schwandorf, Weiden, and Cham — is under the motto 'Queer must stick together — No LGB without the T'. The focus is on the life realities of trans*, inter*, and non-binary people (TINQ). The organizers point to the growing hatred and intolerance towards the trans community and call for solidarity within the entire queer movement.
CSD Amberg is part of a series of Upper Palatinate CSDs: Schwandorf (June 20, 2026), Weiden (July 18, 2026), Amberg (August 1, 2026), Cham (September 2026). Those who want to experience multiple CSDs can travel across Upper Franconia between June and September.
Amberg (around 42,000 inhabitants) is the seat of the government of Upper Franconia and an independent city in northern Bavaria. The picturesque old town with its 'Stadtbrille' (two bridges over the Vils, resembling eyeglasses), Marktplatz, Maltesergebäude, and Rathaus is one of the most intact medieval cityscapes in Bavaria. Holding the CSD in this conservative setting has a special appeal and political significance.
CSD Amberg 2026 continues the annual queer statement in Upper Franconia. Under the motto 'Queer must stick together — No LGB without the T', the life realities of trans*, inter*, and non-binary people are the focus in 2026 — a response to the increasing hatred against the trans community and a call for solidarity within the queer movement.
Hundreds of queer people and allies gather at the Marktplatz, listen to speeches, march through Amberg's old town with motto floats, music, and rainbow flags, and celebrate in the evening with a stage program and aftershow party. An important event for the visibility of queer people in the rural Upper Franconia.
