Traditional market in the heart of Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt
The Nürnberger Herbstmarkt is one of the traditional Krammärkte (goods and traders' markets) in the city of Nuremberg. It is organised by the Nuremberg City Market Office, one of Bavaria's oldest market administrations. The venue is the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg's Old Town – the same square that becomes the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt in December, but here it appears in its historic function as a market in late summer/early autumn.
Approximately 90 stalls fill the Hauptmarkt. The range of goods follows classic market tradition: crockery, household items, clothing, basketry, tools, curtains, and arts and crafts from Germany and abroad. A special feature that has become rare today: a sharpening service for knives and scissors directly at the stall. This sets the Herbstmarkt apart from modern events and makes it seem like a living piece of market history.
Seasonal culinary highlights include Federweißer (freshly fermenting white wine, a specialty only available in autumn) and Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) – the classic German autumn combination. There are also Bratwurst, Nürnberger Lebkuchen (in its hometown), candied almonds, doughnuts, and hearty snack options.
The Herbstmarkt coincides with the Nürnberger Altstadtfest – a scheduling that creates synergy: visitors often combine both events. While the Altstadtfest takes place throughout the Old Town with stages, catering, and clubs, the Herbstmarkt focuses on the Hauptmarkt as a classic market with stalls and food vendors.
Nuremberg is an independent city in Middle Franconia and, with around 530,000 inhabitants, the second-largest city in Bavaria. The market tradition dates back to the Middle Ages – the Hauptmarkt has been the city's central trading place for centuries. The Herbstmarkt builds on this tradition and is part of a broad market calendar organised by the Market Office, which includes the Frühlingsmarkt (Spring Market) and several themed markets in addition to the Christkindlesmarkt.
From September 17 to October 4, 2026, the Nürnberger Herbstmarkt will once again take place on the Hauptmarkt in the heart of the Old Town. For two and a half weeks, around 90 traders will set up their stalls, offering the traditional market assortment: crockery, household items, clothing, basketry, arts and crafts, and – as a special feature – a sharpening service for knives and scissors.
The seasonal food highlights are: fresh Federweißer and Zwiebelkuchen. Both are inextricably linked to German autumn cuisine and are only available during the short period from mid-September to October – a welcome reason to visit the Hauptmarkt in autumn.
During the Herbstmarkt, the Nürnberger Altstadtfest takes place throughout the Old Town with stages, live music, and catering. The two events complement each other – many visitors combine them.
