Germany's oldest and largest free open-air folk and world music festival — 47th edition at the Platz der Alten Kirche
The Krefeld Folklore Festival is a piece of German festival history. Since the early 1980s, it has gathered folk and world musicians from all over the world in Krefeld every year — and it is by far the oldest and largest free open-air festival of its kind in Germany. 2026 marks the 47th edition — a remarkable tradition that has become a must-attend event in the region.
The Platz der Alten Kirche (Square of the Old Church) in Krefeld is a central inner-city square, dominated by the parish church of the same name. With its surrounding cafés and restaurants, historic architecture, and open central space, it forms the atmospheric setting for a two-day open-air festival. Several stages will be set up — a main stage and a market stage — and the entire area will transform into an island of folk and world music.
In 2026, Friday will focus on a clear thematic emphasis: "FEMINAS – Women of the World". International bands with female members will take the stage:
Additionally, on the market stage: DJane Füzûn with world music and danceable sounds.
Saturday will return to the standard Folklore Festival concept — a mixed program with folk and world musicians from around the globe:
Especially for children: Craft workshops for the festival mascot — a water turtle. The workshops are the family element of the event and will be offered throughout both days. Free admission, materials provided by the organizers.
Like many free festivals, the Krefeld Folklore Festival relies on volunteer commitment. The organizers are looking for volunteers to help with beverage, food, and merchandise sales on both festival days. Those who lend a hand for half a day will receive T-shirts, food, and the feeling of having made a real contribution to a cultural phenomenon in return.
Three factors explain its decades-long success story:
If you enjoy listening to world music on the sofa, head to Krefeld on August 28/29. The Folklore Festival is one of the few large-scale events in Germany where folk and world music are treated not as a niche, but as an equally valid mainstream pursuit — free for everyone, of the highest quality.
