Schloß Neuhaus — Baroque Water Castle near Paderborn
Schloß Neuhaus, north of Paderborn, is one of Westphalia's most significant water castles — the seat of the Paderborn prince-bishops from 1257 to 1802. The striking Renaissance water castle with its four corner towers is now located in a 75-hectare Castle and Park, serving as a natural area, event venue, and recreational space. The Marstall — the former princely stables — is now a flexibly usable event location. With its high walls, inner courtyard, lighting, and stage technology, it offers the perfect setting for open-air events against a historical backdrop.
The SchlossSommer 2026 Program
SchlossSommer is the overarching event format of the City of Paderborn for the Schloß Neuhaus Castle and Park. Various events are held under this umbrella during the summer months — from classical concerts and open-air cinema to comedy formats and festivals. Open Air Comedy at the Marstall is one of the most popular formats and has been held annually since 2024 on the first or second weekend of September.
Three Evenings of Comedy at the Marstall
The 2026 edition runs from Friday, September 4th to Sunday, September 6th, 2026. One or more comedy acts will perform each evening — typically a mix of established names from the German comedy scene and up-and-coming newcomers. The exact lineup with artist names and show themes will be announced at short notice — the 2024 and 2025 editions featured well-known figures from the German stand-up and cabaret scene, among others. The Marstall can accommodate several hundred spectators depending on the seating arrangement; it offers an open-air atmosphere on warm evenings, with a roof available in case of rain risk.
What Makes a Marstall Evening Special
- Historical Setting — the walls and ambiance of the baroque stable building are a unique asset
- Open-Air Atmosphere — concert in the inner courtyard under the open sky, with the possibility of a roof in case of rain
- Castle and Park as a Backdrop — a stroll through the park before and after the show, with views of the water castle
- Gastronomy — food and drinks before the show, catering during intermissions
- Established Format — annual event since 2024, two successful editions in 2024 and 2025
Paderborn and Schloß Neuhaus
For those combining the comedy evening with a visit: The Castle and Park itself is a day-trip destination — with water gardens, castle tours (Natural History Museum in the castle), a playground, and sunbathing lawns. Paderborn city center with its cathedral and Pader springs is 5 kilometers away, and Lippesee lake is 2 kilometers away.
