Three days of Schützenfest in the Schützenhalle Postweg 26 in the Paderborn district of Benhausen — May 30 to June 1, 2026
The district of Benhausen, in the north of Paderborn, with around 2,500 inhabitants, is a small, clearly defined village on the transition from the city area to the Senne heathland. The Schützenhalle Benhausen at Postweg 26 is the natural center of the district — and from May 30 to June 1, 2026, the venue for the traditional Schützenfest. Three days, one district, one old shooting tradition.
The shooting tradition (Schützenwesen) in Paderborn and its surroundings is one of Westphalia's oldest traditions. Shooting clubs (Schützenvereine) emerged in the Middle Ages from urban citizen militias and evolved over the centuries into cultural associations that today combine the preservation of customs, social networking, and sporting activities (shooting sports). The individual clubs are organized in the Bezirksverband Paderborn-Stadt e.V.; this in turn is part of the Bund der Historischen Deutschen Schützenbruderschaften Köln e.V. — the overarching Catholic association of German marksmen's guilds.
The festival weekend follows the Westphalian Schützenfest choreography:
The Schützenhalle Benhausen at Postweg 26 is the central event hall for the shooting association — a marquee-like format with a large hall, stage, bar, and club rooms. It is used year-round for events of the shooting society, club festivals, and private celebrations. During the Schützenfest, the hall is the central meeting, dancing, and dining area.
The Benhausen Schützenfest is one of around 30 Schützenfeste in the Paderborn district — the tradition is exceptionally dense in the region and spread throughout the summer months. Districts, neighborhoods, small communities — almost everyone has their own Schützenfest with their own kings, courts, and festival traditions. Benhausen holds its firm place in the shooting calendar; the participation of the district's residents is traditionally high.
In the parade on Sunday, festival bands (often brass bands and marching bands from Paderborn-Stadt and the surrounding area), marksmen in uniform with historical festival attire, the reigning King with his Queen, and the entire royal court march through Benhausen's main street. Those who want to experience the festival culture live should attend the parade — it is the public showcase of the Schützenfest and free for all residents of the district.
Paderborn, as a large city (around 153,000 inhabitants) in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, is a university city, a bishop's seat, and an administrative center. Benhausen, as a district in northern Paderborn, has largely preserved its village identity. Accessible via the A 33 / B 64, connected by bus from Paderborn main station. The Schützenfest is an expression of this district's independence — Paderborn as the umbrella city, Benhausen as a district with its own shooting tradition.
The 2026 Benhausen Schützenfest follows the classic Westphalian tradition: Festkommers, parade, and King's Shooting spread over three days. The Schützenhalle serves as the central venue, and the area around Postweg 26 becomes the festival mile with standing beer tables, food stalls, and a social zone.
Saturday evening is dedicated to the Festkommers — the formal reception with speeches and awards. Sunday noon features the grand parade with the festival band, marksmen in uniform, the king, and his court. Monday is King's Shooting day, culminating at the shooting range and the evening's King's Celebration in the Schützenhalle.
Detailed program with specific times will be communicated by the Bezirksverband Paderborn-Stadt in the weeks leading up to the event on bv-pb-stadt.de.
Admission to the Schützenhalle, festival grounds, and parade is free. Festkommers and King's Celebration in the evening are partly by invitation of the shooting association; the marquee program is open to the public. Food and drinks are subject to charge at usual festival prices.
By car: A 33 / B 64, exit Paderborn-Schloß Neuhaus or Paderborn-Sennelager, then follow signs for Benhausen. By bus: Lines from Paderborn Hauptbahnhof towards Benhausen.
Admission to the Schützenhalle and the festival grounds is free. Consumption in the marquee (beer, snacks, drinks) is subject to charge.
